[AlpacaTalk] showmanship/halter tips?

Hi,

I'm getting ready to show my gelding alpaca in our first showmanship
class. Any tips on what I should expect, or what I will need to do in the
ring? Will the judge check genitalia? What about fleece? Same for the
non-breeder halter class. We've shown in a shorn halter class (in August),
but never in spring when there is fleece on the animal! I've shown in llama
showmanship and halter classes for years, but alpacas are a bit different.
Any tips you can give for either class would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Emaly

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Goldenseal

Hi Janice, in what form are you suggesting using the Goldenseal?  A tincture?  I am looking at the Sleepy Hollow website....  Are you talking about the Hydrastis Complete, or the Root/Rhizome tincture?  Or one of the balms or creams?

Looking forward to hearing you answer :-)

[AlpacaTalk] Goldenseal

<<<<Heather: Thanks for your post about tx for mites. I've battled
those buggers for TWO years now, using the Ivomec injectable protocols,
and can't say it did a thing. I'm giving your ideas a try. I also
agree that some alpacas are much more adversely effected with great
fiber loss and others seem to have very little loss. I've used both the
"witches brew" and the NuStock with very little regrowth. I'm really
thrilled to learn about Tamanu Oil, as I'm sure a couple of these gals
have follicle damage, especially down their neck. It would be so
wonderful to see them "recovered" (pun intended).
>>>>

I would try goldenseal. It is supreme for skin healing - even skin
cancers. And is effective against the MRSA, so I would have great
optimism that it would help with hair regrowth. When I was doctoring my
Allie's slashed eye every few hours I started rubbing her ears down with
goldenseal. She had some sort of funky skin condition on her ears for
the past couple of years. My lack of time and the fact that is was not
life threatening caused it to be put on the back burner. I don't know
if it was mites or what; she had lost her fuzz their and the skin was
bumpy and very rough. Rubbing the goldenseal in every few hours while I
was putting drops in her eyes (and I also made a very dilute solution of
the goldenseal (it is an alcohol extract - so VERY dilute) to put in her
eyes as well) cleared up her ears in less than a week and fuzz was
growing back when I stopped. I should have kept it up for maybe another
week. 6 months later they are not totally healed up and perfect but
they are tons better than they were.

Also as an aside, the vet was sure we would lose the eyeball (involving
very expensive surgery at the University so I was extremely motivated to
heal this eyeball). When it looked good to me after about 10-14 days I
had the vet back over to get her opinion on stopping all the meds. She
was astounded at how good the eye looked. Said she had never seen such
a damaged eye heal up so quickly.

I have said here before - Goldenseal rocks!
The most potent and the only brand I know for sure that has sufficient
levels of goldenseal alkaloids in it is from Sleepy Hollow. I do not
benefit financially from recommending them, but I am one of their
organic growers and I know their processes and know their testing of
their product. Their product is being used at several Universities
around the country in various trials. One awesome trial at the U of IL
at Chicago in their dental dept showing how effective it is against the
bacteria in our mouth that is associated with heart disease. I rinse
with the goldenseal solution every morning after I floss. The taste
takes some getting used to, but leaves your mouth incredibly fresh.
Sleepy Hollow makes an Oral Care solution with some mint in it.
Goldenseal is extremely bitter due to its high concentration of alkaloids.

Anyway, if you decide to check them out, please let them know I sent you
over. They have told me they have rec'd many orders/inquiries from
alpaca folks as I have shared with them my successes with using it on my
own alpacas. I like to support small family owned businesses that are
doing an awesome job :-). This is one product I will never be without
in my emergency kit for my family both 2 legged and 4 legged.

Their personal web site is sleepy hollow herb farm dot com. Organipharm
is the company that I grow for that is being developed as a farmers
owned coop business. I am not sure which label he is currently selling
from.

Good luck on that "re-cover-y"

Warmly, Janice
