Re: [AlpacaTalk] Guard llama question

Sue, I always wanted an LGD and our neighbor has a rescued female that is perfect.  I just know though that he/she would be inside sleeping in front of the fire or ON our bed if its cold out!!!  LOL

I wish we could have LGD's here, Sue, but the way our ranch is set up they wouldn't have access to the outer pasture fences.  : )

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Pet peeve

i had a girl removed from the "rose gray" class and put into the "fancy" category because she has a large (8 inches) rose gray patch on her back - i wondered what the difference was between fancy and multi but it seems they mean the same thing.

Yes, the spots need to be large, not just freckles, although appaloosa alpacas are also classified as multis.  Sometimes it just depends on the color checker or the judge at each show, especially when the multi classes are small out here.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Guard llama question

I'm happy for Sammy, Susan.  We think about how we would like to breed our lady llamas, too, but haven't actually moved on it -- yet.  A friend of ours has a nice llama herd, and we have talked about potential boyfriends for our girls.

While we're talking about guardians, here's something else for you to think about, maybe for the future.  We brought in our llamas to be guardians over our alpacas.  Then, we brought in our Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, and they watch over everyone!  We believe in the best, no-climb fencing you can put up (and the higher, the better), LGD's (livestock guardian dogs), then the llamas, and the alpacas.  We have been blessed that this system of protection has kept our herd safe for the past nine years.  We are very strong believers that the dogs are necessary.  Great Pyrenees bark at night, to tell potential predators to take their business elsewhere.  They also take incredible care of crias, too.  More often than not, the llamas team up with the dogs.  The llamas keep lookout, alarm if they see something, and then the dogs fly into action.  It's an amazing (and very humbling) thing to watch!

Best regards,
Sue

Thanks, Sue, that really helps!  I had heard things like "never breed your guard llama because they will no longer guard" but I just find that really hard to believe.  I would think they would guard MORE if they had their own cria.  Anyway, thanks a ton for that info - I think we owe Sammy the guard llama a cria of her own!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Pet peeve

This show was at Mapaca Jubilee which is a very large show.  The color checkers thought he was an indefinite fawn but the group of 4 judges then looked at him and said no he was a multi because the spot was so large.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Pet peeve

Hi Susan,

I have a light fawn vicuna pattern male with a large beige spot on his back and the judges classified him as a multi because the spot was larger than 6 inches.  They said the size of the spot was the reason.  The other animals in his class also had large areas or spots of a lighter or darker color.

hi Susan - what is a multi?

Hi Wendy - thanks for asking!  A multi is a pinto or paint-colored alpaca with large white patches on a dark body OR large dark patches on a white body.  Pintos have white across their backbone between the withers (shoulderblades) and the tail.  Tuxedos are not multis unless they also have large white patches on their body.

My pet peeve was that I keep seeing animals that are just dark animals with white socks and white facial markings being registered and/or listed on the sales websites as multis, which they definitely are not.  (excuse me while my latest kitten rescue is giving me hugs around the neck and kisses so its hard to type LOL - needless to say, we are keeping this one, which now totals 10 cats!  Some are adoptions waiting to happen though.)
