i had a girl removed from the "rose gray" class and put into the "fancy" category because she has a large (8 inches) rose gray patch on her back - i wondered what the difference was between fancy and multi but it seems they mean the same thing.

Yes, the spots need to be large, not just freckles, although appaloosa alpacas are also classified as multis.  Sometimes it just depends on the color checker or the judge at each show, especially when the multi classes are small out here.
