Re: [AlpacaTalk] Guard llama question
I'm happy for Sammy, Susan. We think about how we would like to breed our lady llamas, too, but haven't actually moved on it -- yet. A friend of ours has a nice llama herd, and we have talked about potential boyfriends for our girls.
While we're talking about guardians, here's something else for you to think about, maybe for the future. We brought in our llamas to be guardians over our alpacas. Then, we brought in our Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, and they watch over everyone! We believe in the best, no-climb fencing you can put up (and the higher, the better), LGD's (livestock guardian dogs), then the llamas, and the alpacas. We have been blessed that this system of protection has kept our herd safe for the past nine years. We are very strong believers that the dogs are necessary. Great Pyrenees bark at night, to tell potential predators to take their business elsewhere. They also take incredible care of crias, too. More often than not, the llamas team up with the dogs. The llamas keep lookout, alarm if they see something, and then the dogs fly into action. It's an amazing (and very humbling) thing to watch!
Best regards,
Sue

Thanks, Sue, that really helps! I had heard things like "never breed your guard llama because they will no longer guard" but I just find that really hard to believe. I would think they would guard MORE if they had their own cria. Anyway, thanks a ton for that info - I think we owe Sammy the guard llama a cria of her own!SUSANAlpaca LocoRiverside, CA
