I am pleased to say our cria weighs 18.6 today….so while she had a bit of a slow start, I think she is doing pretty well, now.  She gained .6 since yesterday, so anything near a half pound a day sounds good to me!

Momma has milk and is doing well.

Now, another dilemma; we have an older Suri mom (14) with an 8 month old boy.  He is long overdue for weaning.  I wouldn’t worry about it but she is pregnant and due in Sept, so boy child MUST get off of her teats!   I have started weaning- separated them Tuesday, so two days, now.  He is humming for her but eventually runs off with the herd.  She seemed fine…..didn’t seem bothered by his absence until today and she is looking for him and standing as close to the gate as she can get to be closer to him.  My main concern is that her udder is huge.  This girl looks almost like a dairy goat.  I am sure she is uncomfortable, which is why she is looking for him.

What can I do to help her dry up?  I don’t think putting him on her will help that.  I breast fed and gradually weaned my kids off by stopping the daytime nursing and only nursing at night for awhile.  Should I do something like that for them or just stick to the plan and not let him nurse?  Also, do you think a dose of banamine will help her feel better.

I am checking with you all before asking the vet.  I have called the vet so many times this last 8 days it isn’t funny!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Viccoyo

Wendy, I'm so happy that it all worked out and that Viccoyo was able to deliver the breech without damage to herself.  I'm sure that having the opportunity to nurse Sointula helped Viccoyo emotionally, even though I know she will grieve for her own cria.  She is very fortunate to have you to care for her at this tragic time.

[AlpacaTalk] Viccoyo

hi everyone -  Viccoyo is physically well, the vet cleaned her out, gave her various forms of anti-biotics and left bottles of B vitamins, more antibiotics and selenium for her - she will receive follow-up meds for three weeks and then once a month til we can get some weight on her -

we got quite a jolt this afternoon when we arrived home from work - there was Viccoyo nursing a tiny cria - both of them quite contented, off by themselves.  We were looking at each other in disbelief

Another one of our girls, Amber, had given birth, and then as Amber has always been a disinterested mom, she was quite happy to let Viccoyo take over. In the past we have had to force Amber to bond with her baby, as she is not very maternal.

So there we were, tending to the new BABY GIRL, and running around shifting animals into different pens etc to get everybody organized - Viccoyo is grieving for her baby but we have put our Matriarch, another old girl, in with her to keep her company - we can feed her up in the small pen and give her shots etc - keep an eye on her - Baby girl (named Sointula) is in with her own mom who has accepted her and is nursing her

i know this is a long post but it has just been such an emotional day - thanks everyone for all the support - and Judith you saved my sanity this morning - thanks for being online so early

Re: [AlpacaTalk] birthing question

Wendy,
So sorry to hear about this.
I had my first breech last summer, but the vet tried to turn it. I think the cord got caught & broken when she tried as the cria stopped moving. So painful...................I'm so sorry. Hopefully this mom will be able to get her strength back, both physically & emotionally.

I absolutely agree with this! I think it's acceptable to leave the last previous post, or, if it's long, a portion of it. But please please please, everyone, don't just reply to a long thread, leaving several email/posts attached!
