RE: [AlpacaTalk] what to use?

Milk her more often and clean her out each time---then slowly milk more and more, but slowly.  That builds her milk supply---which she will need to support these kids.    If you can milk her thoroughly 3 times per day---and be sure she has AMPLE food, you can through demand, build her milk supply up.  That is what happens naturally when they all nurse and there is not enough.  One baby goes away hungry and then comes back a little while later to complete the meal.

She will have a supply past which it will not increase---but at only week one, she can build a greater supply than she now has.

Good luck.  Enjoy those kids while they are cute!!!

My first timer nubian goat, had triplets, she did reject them, but i'm milking her 2 times a day, and feeding the  kids. She only gives about 1/2 gal. of milk per day,  which i mix with some frozen milk, I had last year, from another goat.  BUT now i'm running out of the frozen milk. And wondering what I  can mix with  moms milk, so there is enough, for each day.  the kids are  a week old, and doing very good,  i'm feeding them at 8:00 12:30, 5:30 and the last feeding at 10:00 at night.  That has been working pretty good.  Should I mix moms milk with kid replacer? I sure hate to change things (formula). But when you run out, you have to do something!  any suggestions?

No problem! But I'll tell you what I use for my alpacas. Just whole cow's milk, and when they're little, we do 3/4 4% cow milk, 1/8 heavy cream or whipping cream, and 1/8 vanilla yogurt. They do very well on that diet.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] leptospira

If it is endemic in your area, definitely vaccinate against it. No reason to take unnecessary risks.

Heather,
I'm not sure that it's in the 7 or 8 way. In Dr. Evans manual has it listed separately and it is listed separately on websites where you would
purchase the vaccine. Most farms in our area give CD & T yearly and Ivo once a month. Our vet said there had been documented cases with other livestock
in the area. We don't have any other livestock with or near the alpacas and our dogs have been vaccinated for it. The vet was more concerned with the possibly
of it being spread to humans. Also in Dr. Evans manual: Dr. Pat Long recommended it if there are diagnosed cases in your area.

I know that we are in the mindset that we need to vaccinate for everything and have created animals that are drug resistant. However, if there are documented
cases, I don't think I'm willing to take the chance of one of my animals (or family members) getting sick because I didn't vaccinate.

There are many schools of thought on this issue and people have to do what they are comfortable with.
Hopefully, I'll hear from some others about this vaccine.

I don't have very good info for you, but is it in 7 or 8-way vaccines? We used to give those when we started out, but have chosen the "less is more" approach. We switched to CD&T, then in the last few years have stopped with that, too, since we don't feed corn or grain based feed. We are not in M-worm territory, thankfully, but if we were, we'd be giving the Ivo once a month.

As I understand it, Lepto is only really a problem if alpacas are run with or near other livestock like sheep or goats. Possibly cows, but I'm not sure on that. It's my understanding that goats especially, are little germ and parasite factories. I hope someone with better info will chime in!
