Re: [AlpacaTalk] Progestrone for pregnancy testing

My vet drew the blood and sent it to Cornell.  It was negative for pg.  But, she WAS pregnant.  I'll stick with the spit test, although I really wish I could believe in the pg. test.

Heather - the back leg vein is SO easy - I won't draw from the jugular.  What I do is at shearing, I get the tubes for the blood, while the alpaca is down for shearing I just get a syringe and draw from the leg vein.  Try it, you'll never do it any other way.  It saves you a TON of money on BVDV tests, pregnancy tests, etc.

Ah, well you're brave. Our vets have trouble finding the vein, I wouldn't dare do that myself! More power to you, though, if you have the skills~!

Janice - you might try trading breedings with one of your alpaca ranch neighbors if your male shows no interest.  I feel for you!

We are going to try to breed our junior herdsire for the second time around to the female that kicked him in the head.  He wouldn't have anything to do with her, even though we left them together in the same pen for a long time.  I'm hoping he's forgotten and she doesn't do that again.  ; )

Re: [AlpacaTalk] pregnancy testing

Oh yes, it does sound like hid girlfriend is pregnant. :)

And yes, sometimes they just don't like someone else. It's not very common, but it does happen. It could also be that if your male was in with the matriarch when he was younger, and while she was pregnant, he learned not to mess with her at all. That kind of conditioning is hard to overcome.

What could be going on here?

The male has been separated from the females for the past year +; the

after giving up on the matriarch I let this other female - his favorite,

take him 2 min to start trying to mount her and she was spitting him off
like crazy. It took 2 of us to pull him off her and get her out of there.

So I take that to mean she is preg!? Oh boy, another winter baby -
just what I have been trying to avoid :-(.

Are they really that particular and have their favorites and others
there are just "not that into"?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Bottle Baby Kids - Carolyn

Hi, this is the Carolyn, that accidentally posted to the wrong group!  I ment to post to  my Nubian group, about my goats.--lol  I am an alpaca breeder first and most, and yes I am on this group  a lot.  Sorry again, that I sent my goat question to the alpaca talk group.  Maybe it was  ok, though  as yes, it did get a milk topic going--lol  If my alpaca Cria's, needed a supplement, I  would  use milk  from  my goats.  I have  only had to do that once though, and only for about 2 weeks.  The cria did extremely well on it.

[AlpacaTalk] RE: Bottle Baby Kids - Carolyn

<<<< Hi,.......me Carolyn or another? I've seen the posts on this topic on
AlpacaTalk. I early on used diluted goat milk, but have since found
that ordinary Vit. D milk with added whipping cream works great and is
readily
available. Have fed several over the years using this. They seem to
like it and do well, growing well and maintaining healthy beans.

Carolyn Marquette,>>>

Sorry Carolyn, there was another Carolyn who posted here about bottle
feeding goat kids - and then apologized for posting to the wrong
group.....but she sure did get a heated discussion going lol.

I don't know if she is a regular poster here or not, I didn't recognize
her addy.
I'll send that post to her privately just in case she is not a regular here.

I had posted my take on the question was to use goat's milk for bottle
feeding goat!
It is readily available in pretty much any grocery store. My only
complaint about it would be that it is "ultra-pateurized" which means
dead. So for the crias I would go with the cow milk which everyone
seems to have good luck with. I hope to never have to bottle feed
another alpaca!

Always good to see you post; hope your trip was good and I appreciate
you taking the time when you were in such a rush to offer advice to my
friend. I hope his girl is doing better by now, she was making some
improvement; but haven't heard in a while, so I can't help but worry.

Warmly, Janice
