[AlpacaTalk] deaf cria

Thank you for all the information for this topic of my deaf cria. We named her Snow White. She is a bundle of energy and so much fun. I just didnt know whether to breed her or not and you have answered all of my questions.

Thanks again.

[AlpacaTalk] RE: 1st cria

<<<After 3 long years, we had our first cria born yesterday.
> Unfortunately, instead of it being a happy time (as it should be)

I am so sorry for your loss.   It is so hard when something goes wrong.
Yesterday was the 8yr anniversary of our first born cria....which I also waited 3 long years for.
He was born on the hottest day of the year and was clearly in grave distress.   Not standing at all, laying there and the flies were eating him alive.   I waited for what seemed like forever for the vet.
Many heroic measures were taken over the next 24 hrs and the vet feared his back legs were paralyzed; but we tube fed him and helped him up on his legs over and over again.   Over and Over the following several days I would find the little boy laying out in the blistering hot sun and would have to pick him up and carry him back to the barn.   He would stagger around a bit (after the first few days when he couldn't stand at all), then fall down and not get back up.
It was touch and go for the longest time.
But this week he is 8 yrs old and the clown of the herd.   This boy will stand on those back legs forever, dancing around eating privit from the top of the tall tree/bushes or eating off the apple tree that he can reach from the pasture by standing/dancing on those back legs.
Solid white he was named "Snowball in July".   He is the only living offspring of my beloved Charlie Brown who passed in early 07 and is very special to me.  He has his father's awesome funny personality and is very affectionate and curious.

I have lost many crias.   It is never a good day.

My thoughts are with you during this time.
Janice
