[AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

LOL, I know the feeling. Mine wants to have her own baby so bad. She had 2 or 3 before I got her, they still live at the place I'm re-homing her to, so she'll be happy to see them. The only reason I haven't bred her is she had meningeal worm (b/4 I got her) and her back legs are very stiff. In the winter she sometimes needs help getting up. So I figured another 50# of baby weight probably wouldn't be a good thing!

Cheers,

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

I am glad to hear you take your right to defend your animals very seriously.  My friend lost five sheep to one stray husky.  By the time they realized what was happening and got the rifle, four had been mauled and one chased into the pond and drowned.  She was horrified.  Her husband shot the dog and the sheriff was called out.  They tracked down the dog’s owner and told him……of course the owner was bent out of shape because someone shot his dog.  The nerve!  I told my friend to pursue reimbursement for the sheep, but I don’t think they did.  I would have.  At least now the neighbors know they can and WILL shoot if needed.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

I have heard of llamas breeding with ewes and killing them. I don’t know anyone and have never seen this firsthand, but I have heard or read about it.

Our gelded llama will only be placed with boys and his primary job is to referee the boys when they fight.  I have two Pyrs in with my girls and crias because I think two full grown Pyrs have a better chance of protecting than one llama.  They are also very intimidating when they bark and growl and they are very alert.   I also depend on them to keep people out of my pastures.  If they don’t know someone and one of us don’t introduce them, they can be very ferocious!

If our llama, nicknamed “Moose” is protective of his herd, that is a plus……..but we are not depending on him to save the herd from predators.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

WOW, you people are so nice to intruders.. Everyone knows where I live that I have miniature animals and alpacas and after loosing a tiny foal and 1 cria to the neighborhood roamers I had enough. I contacted the people surrounding me and let them know I have a no warning rule.  If your dog enters my property it is dead, same with coyotes, foxes and bobcats.  To be honest the wild critters are rarely a problem and My miniature donkeys 2, jennys and 1 jack patrol the property.  I have had to shoot as many as 5 marauding dogs at one time and they belonged to 3 different neighbors, once they pack up it is impossible to stop them without shooting them.  They go about killing everything they can corner or catch including other pets like small dogs ( I have 5) cats (Have 11) as well as chickens, my peafowl and guineas.  I am a good shot and almost never miss and my neighbor are aware of this.

Believe me, my stance has not been a popular one but on the other hand I have not had to shoot any dogs for the last 3 years.

GOOD LUCK and keep your critters safe

Wishing everyone the best in this industry that I love.

None the less want to send a reminder:
Llamas are wonderful Alert Guards but they are Not a Guarding
-Fighting/Protector . A Llama is a wonder to watch as they play
with crias and keep track of their charges and they Will push
those charges to whatever safety is available before turning to
face the "enemy" .

However, I beg, don't think of Llamas as disposable barriers between
your animals and the roving "gangs" of neighborhood dogs. As we
have seen NOTHING survives when there are enough dogs or when
the predators work in teams.

Please, remember that it is Your Job to Respond to their Alert Calls.
even if you are not "sure" you heard it. No excuses you have to
show up!
You are the critical final layer of protection between your animals
and your neighbors' sweet 'fluffy, rufus, and butch....' who are
evil H&!! spawn when they get to run loss, UNattended.

I've lost whole week's worth of sleep over the years, to strange
sounds and cria watch and I have 6' No-climb exterior fences
with another 18"+/- buried; with all of this, I still have had loses.
Now I am planning how to expand the paddocks around the barns
and inner shelters just to have them closer to the house (to hear
better at night, during cria season, and to make winter hypothermia
watch easier).

I recommend you follow my habit when responding to an Alert, I
carrying 2 guns.
1 is a paintball gun sends them home with a mark that is also
a warning.
The other gun has as its companion, a nice shiny shovel.

I'm not evil or a dog hater or an angry hermit I just don't want to
be the next person to have to post that I'm out of the camelid
industry because dogs or hunters or other evil doers have
demolished my herd. It is my personal nightmare.

My best to all and in particular to those who have managed to
come back from such devastating losses. May no one have to
post such enormously sad tidings again.
