RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: guard llama

I have heard of llamas breeding with ewes and killing them. I don’t know anyone and have never seen this firsthand, but I have heard or read about it.

Our gelded llama will only be placed with boys and his primary job is to referee the boys when they fight.  I have two Pyrs in with my girls and crias because I think two full grown Pyrs have a better chance of protecting than one llama.  They are also very intimidating when they bark and growl and they are very alert.   I also depend on them to keep people out of my pastures.  If they don’t know someone and one of us don’t introduce them, they can be very ferocious!

If our llama, nicknamed “Moose” is protective of his herd, that is a plus……..but we are not depending on him to save the herd from predators.
