RE: [AlpacaTalk] It's OVER!!!

Way to go Judy!

We are scheduled for May 8th...I hope!  We have 20 and the other farm has about 30, so we have a big day ahead of us too!  I will get the cooler full of ice and chuck it full of water and gatorade!  I am bound and determined that I will build a nice skirting table and start skirting the fleece quickly and get some fiber off to the mills!  The remainder fiber I think I may make some pet pillows.  My cats love sleeping on my last years fiber.  She looks soooo cozy!  We also make a nice lunch with lunch meat sandwhiches, veggies and snacks.  We try and wait until we only have a few animals left before eating....it's a bit hard to rest while eating and then getting our sore butts off the chairs and back into the barns!  But it sure does feel good when it's done!

Well, shearing is over for another year...thank goodness, my back is still sore and we did it last Friday.
37 alpaca boys!
I was pleasantly pleased that the quality of the fibre in my herd has improved a lot over the last year.
And no one spit on anyone. It was a very laid back shearing.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Cria

Robin,

Spring is the time for shearing! I am in my first year of learning everything Alpaca. This weekend I made the time to go visit Seldom Scene Farm in Frankfort, Ky. I helped sweep all day and learned so much from these great Alpaca farmers. I took allot of pictures and asked questions all day long. You can find their farm on Facebook as well as mine to see some of the pictures. I will be happy to email pictures and video to you as well if you like. They hired www.alpacashearing.com to do the main work. Four young men and they worked too, got 93 animals sheared, toes trimmed and teeth cut in about 11 hours! That averages to 8.5 an hour. That is 7 minutes on the ground. They roped and stretched the alpaca, took the blanket off then shaved the neck, body and most of the legs. When they brought in the month old crias I was amazed. They got the same treatment and shave. Same clippers and blades, brand name Heiniger. They told me the baby was covered in ambionic (sp) fluids and it would affect the quality of the fiber. So they all get sheared. This farm has been in the business since the early '90s. They have had the well known Dr Evans as one of their vets. I did not know Dr Evans was from Kentucky! I was learning all day long - a great experience.

We had a cria that broke her leg last year. They shaved her hip for surgery. Her fiber on that hip area is awesome. I wish we would have sheared her all over! This year the cria will be sheared.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: chiropractic adjustments

I've been Rolfed, and it hurts but feels good at the same time if you know what I mean.  They pretty much pinch the skin up and tear any adhesions away from the fascia and muscle.  It really helps my upper back.  On the other hand, I can't imagine an alpaca standing still for Rolfing.  Maybe a very well-behaved horse might, but an alpaca?  Interesting.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca treats

I don't feed grain to alpacas, it isn't good for them.  Just natural fruits and veggies - mostly baby carrots and they get their pellets hand-fed at halter training time and sometimes just as a treat.

[AlpacaTalk] Re:Shearing Cria

We shear them all! If they are born on shear day they get in line and
get shorn. That fleece needs to come off so the good stuff can come in.
We breed for black/grey and few are born that color so it's also good to
get the stained tips off. Any born after shear day we shear ourselves at
a few days old. Same shears as adults.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Hijacked question about Alpaca Treats

<<<This morning I sliced up a nice Walla Walla Sweet onion and - IT"S
TRUE ! crazy, but my girls were following me, checking my pockets and
fingers for more. I was laughing so hard I had to lean on one of the
girls to keep from falling down. Don't think I want to be around when
they bring that cud up for the re-chew.

blackpearlfarm>>>

Oh, too funny! Now I know who has been nibbling the tops off the
vidalia onions I have planted. I never suspected the alpacas!
I love a good laugh and enjoy the image of you having to lean on one of
yours to keep from falling down.
Nothing better than a hearty laugh!
Warmly, JaniceElizabeth
