[AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Cria

Robin,

Spring is the time for shearing! I am in my first year of learning everything Alpaca. This weekend I made the time to go visit Seldom Scene Farm in Frankfort, Ky. I helped sweep all day and learned so much from these great Alpaca farmers. I took allot of pictures and asked questions all day long. You can find their farm on Facebook as well as mine to see some of the pictures. I will be happy to email pictures and video to you as well if you like. They hired www.alpacashearing.com to do the main work. Four young men and they worked too, got 93 animals sheared, toes trimmed and teeth cut in about 11 hours! That averages to 8.5 an hour. That is 7 minutes on the ground. They roped and stretched the alpaca, took the blanket off then shaved the neck, body and most of the legs. When they brought in the month old crias I was amazed. They got the same treatment and shave. Same clippers and blades, brand name Heiniger. They told me the baby was covered in ambionic (sp) fluids and it would affect the quality of the fiber. So they all get sheared. This farm has been in the business since the early '90s. They have had the well known Dr Evans as one of their vets. I did not know Dr Evans was from Kentucky! I was learning all day long - a great experience.

We had a cria that broke her leg last year. They shaved her hip for surgery. Her fiber on that hip area is awesome. I wish we would have sheared her all over! This year the cria will be sheared.
