Re: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Cria

I had one last year that we sheared at 6 days. As far as I know, the shearer used the same blades he did with the adults. Cria and Mom did fine........I was a mess! Before she was shorn, I did rub the outside of a cria coat all over her...vigorously. It was mid-May and I figured she might still need a coat for at least a few nights. Mom was fine with it and her fiber is so much more useable than when they don't get shorn. I really think that whoever said, "If they're born, they're shorn" hit the nail on the head.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Cria

We are trying to develop a plan of action in shearing cria. We have tipped a few with some result but this year we would like to completely shear their bodies. We had a cria that broke her leg last year. They shaved her hip for surgery. Her fiber on that hip area is awesome. I wish we would have sheared her all over! This year the cria will be sheared.
What do you do at your ranches?
What age do you shear the cria.
What equipment do you use? Oster? Andis? Other
What blades do you use?
Do you just shear their bodies or necks too?
Thanks in advance
