Re: [AlpacaTalk] BEW's

Hi Wendy,

Definitely go to the alpacanation forum and search on BEW.? Several folks give the reasons why they would, and would not, buy a BEW.? Mainly its financial, because if you breed them right, there is not issue with it in the offspring.? And not all are deaf - even the ones who are don't pass it on with proper breeding, and most are able to cope fine with the assistance of their hearing counterparts.

hi - i really appreciate all this information and the web sites - i was talking to a breeder today and she told me that some people prefer BEW's - but considering the fact they could be deaf and disadvantaged, i'm not sure why anyone would try to breed or buy BEW's - maybe there is something i am missing - i will continue to follow up on the websites and read, read, read.

And one other thing - I have found both Dr Merriwether and?Neil Padgett?at ALpaca Fun Farm very willing to help explain things in private e-mail.? Same with Wayne Jarvis at Sixth Day Farm - his web site has several of Andy's articles also.?

Hi Wendy;

We breed for grey, and so do quite a few farms. A Paca
Fun Farm I think has the most interesting viewpoint on
grey/grey breedings. All the grey breeders I know
actually do breed grey to grey. We also breed other
colors to them. If you go on alpacanation forum and do
a search for BEW you will find a large amount of
information on BEW. Very helpful, and sometimes very
confusing. It does take people awhile to understand
the the Blue eyes that are being discussed are the
crystal blue and not the dark blue that many alpacas
have. And If you have any specific questions you can
always write to me, I would be happy to tell you
anything I might know, or at least point you in the
right direction.

Have fun researching!!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] BEW

Hi Wendy,

I'm glad it helped. Very few people know that grays count as patterned. My very first cria was a BEW. The father was a gray and the mother was a true black with a few very small gray spots. I was really shocked when the cria was born. It started me reading to learn more about BEW. It is really a very interesting topic. BEW can also be bred to dark solid alpacas. It is also interesting to note that a white alpaca can have one of the spotting genes, but of course they spots would not show...

hi Janet - thanks very much for the article by Dr. Andy Merriwether - this clarifies the situation for me - it has been a question for us because of some of the gray females we have. We are very new to the alpaca business and had heard bits and pieces of information about BEW, but nothing conclusive until now.
