Re: [AlpacaTalk] BEW

Hi Wendy,

I'm glad it helped. Very few people know that grays count as patterned. My very first cria was a BEW. The father was a gray and the mother was a true black with a few very small gray spots. I was really shocked when the cria was born. It started me reading to learn more about BEW. It is really a very interesting topic. BEW can also be bred to dark solid alpacas. It is also interesting to note that a white alpaca can have one of the spotting genes, but of course they spots would not show...

hi Janet - thanks very much for the article by Dr. Andy Merriwether - this clarifies the situation for me - it has been a question for us because of some of the gray females we have. We are very new to the alpaca business and had heard bits and pieces of information about BEW, but nothing conclusive until now.
