RE: [AlpacaTalk] vaginal prolapse
Hi Mcswanson,
Yes, we had a smallish maiden girl with a very large, active baby who was
making a protrusion the size of a softball outside. We took her to UCDavis
where they put her on Naxcell for infection of the exposed tissues. They
told us to keep her on the antibiotic and to let her carry to as close to
term as she could. This was about 10 days before her due date. We did as
asked and she had a totally normal, unobserved, quick birth with a healthy,
active female cria. There was no after birth problem of any sort. We did
(and do as a matter of course) give her an infusion of 1.5 ounces of
hydrogen peroxide at 3 days into the uterus as a cleaning out. She has
rebred at 2 weeks and settled with the first breeding. She is just a small
girl and the baby was almost 18 lbs, so very large for her.
By the way, you might just have forgotten, but we on the list appreciate it
if you'd sign your post so we can call you by name, it just sounds more
polite!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] vaginal prolapse
We have a 6 year old alpaca female with a vaginal prolapse that occurs
about 1 month before giving birth. During the last month, it pops out
every once in a while and we have to put it back in. In the past,
births have been normal. Is their anyone who has had this happen to
them and what did you do about it? Thank you.
