Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: breeder/references

I totally agree with you, Tim.  This is a learning forum for sure.  One of our first purchases was a nice Suri female from back East.  The breeder said she was the first born on their ranch and very friendly, her name even had something like "Gentle" in it.  When she got here she was NASTY.  Even the shipper said she kicked him EVERY time he went in to clean and was extremely accurate too, if you know what I mean.  So we really thought the breeder had lied to us.  She kicked me every chance she got so I made it a point to brush against her gently every time I went in with her and just ignored the kicks.  Cursed because they hurt, but ignored them.  She got better but was never very nice.  Then low and behold, she gives birth and becomes as sweet as pie.  During her first pregnancy she was so nasty and for the last two pregnancies has been really sweet.  Who knew?  Not the breeder, as it was her first pregnancy and she was newly pregnant.  So, you live and learn and that's what makes this business interesting.

Its just when I hear stories of experienced breeders taking advantage of inexperienced buyers, it makes my blood boil.  I'm so glad that story was posted here.  Kudos to that farm for their diligence in handling the situation and also for posting it here so that future buyers can read it and learn instead of making the same mistake.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: breeder/references

Susan,
At no point in my reply did I say or imply that the breeder was not partially responsible or that the buyer was inexperienced.
That is not the commentary in my reply.
I am simply sending a helpful list of things to consider before buying any animal from any farm and making sure you understand what you are entering into.
This is more for the new people looking to invest or newly invested.
The musings in my posting are meant to serve as reminders to help cut down on bad experiences
My female was not Bossy If I turned my back she would rear up and jump on me from behind. If I stood in her exit she would run me down. Spit every chance she got.
Beserk? No mean, rotten, hateful to me? YES
Could I have handled her? Sure I could have man handled her and did.
I also realized that I would eventually hurt her, So…I took her back to the breeder who traded for an alpaca for equal value.
She was very good stock and they had the resources to handle her.
Great Breeder!!!

Did they have to do that? No it was not in my contract.
I don't agree with what happened to this person….BAD BREEDER!!!
So I posted some things to consider that may help to avoid this.
As times get tougher and the market gets more challenging I think you will find that not all investors are as wonderful as the Alpaca world would like to think.
Again…………..
Some things to consider before purchase....Disposition of animal and sire and dam...did offspring inherit the gentle natureor the wild/evil side. Future offspring will also.Handle each animal as an individual, can you touch legs, feet, tail withoutgetting kicked or pulled or spit on?How does this animal react to you and your style of handling? If this is a bred female when is she due? Do I want a winter birth; is my barnset up for that?Evaluate all these and fiber, conformation, etc, then ask yourself? Is the work I will have to put into caring for this animal in proportion to thevalue I will get out?Poor planning and short sightedness makes for a rotten relationship.Man and BeastTim GrayGreenbrier Creek AlppacasOrient,Ohio Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:34 pm Show Message Option "sansuiau7700" <graytt@msn.com> sansuiau7700 Offline Send Email
