Re: [AlpacaTalk] Please talk me in to joining AOBA

Well, don't get me started on the questionable costs AOBA incurs. $70k
per year for a web designer? I mean really. In Tennessee? Around here a
web designer with those qualifications is lucky to get $15 per hour.
Why don't they just have Network Solutions design a new site and
maintain and host if for a fraction of that price? I don't remember
what the costs of simply moving to Tennessee were but they were
outrageous. New break room furniture... new computers... on and on and
on... $4k skirting tables? Good lord.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Please talk me in to joining AOBA

Best reason: To be a supporter of the alpaca industry and community. AOBA supports the entire alpaca community... the community should support AOBA. The associated costs are part of doing business and should be a fixture on the business plan and budget. $225 (AOBA, Alpacas mag & Show Division), 60 cents per day, is only 1 or 2% of the cost of most alpacas. Small change and a bargain in today's marketplace.

One reason and the reason I joined: There is a $50 fee to enter shows
if you are not a Show Division member. I think that's per show, not per
animal, but at just 3 shows, your $75 associate membership plus your
$50 Show Division fee will more than make up that cost.

Word is still out on whether or not Alpacas Magazine will be included
in memberships, but if they do decide to continue the subscription as a
membership benefit, that is another reason to cough up the $125.

Another reason would be your ability to vote on important issues like
the breed standard currently causing a big stink, and BOD, etc.
Actually I'm not sure if associate members can vote, perhaps not. But
again my reason to join was so that I wouldn't have to pay the $50 show
division surcharge per show.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Please talk me in to joining AOBA

Happy holiday Sharon & Jim,

I just pulledup your website and saw that you have several ribbons under your belts, congradulaion on those. Correct me if I'm wrong somebody, But if you show in an AOBA show you have to be a member. So if you continue to show it makes it worth it. Besides, you'll save money by also joining the show division, verses paying the "non-show members" extra fee, usually around $35-50 per show. So now the question is at what level? IMHO, I won't pay to join any group without a vote.
Please keep in mind that the above is simply a business opinion given the facts. Will I be joining again in 06? I'm not sure. I'm not into showing, and we were one of the "missed" farms that were left out of the 05 directory, so I got a month of advertising for my money in 05.I believe in standing up for what I believe in, but I'm not sure that having a vote in AOBA will make a difference at this point in time. I'm hoping things will change. I have no advertising budget for 06, so sparing the funds at this time...I'm not convinced of it yet. But who knows what tomorrow will bring. If I were interested in showing, then it would be something that would have to be done.
I just looked at your signature and noticed you are in Potsdam. My husband Tim, is from Norfolk! Small world huh? His family is still in Norfolk, norwood and Massena. Stay warm!
