[AlpacaTalk] Re:toe trimmers...which ones?

Well, I will jump in on this one..
We use these

They work great and you can get them at your local Wal-mart.... We got a pair of shears you posted and they didn't cut right. So we asked our shearer and he told us to use these... And we asked around and found out that  several of the farms that were there for shearing day used them

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Bottle baby

Well, my bottle baby refuses to nurse from mama, even though mama has tons of milk. Ever heard of a baby rejecting the mother?

Mine is also 2 weeks old, tomorrow. She's up to  over 1/2 gallon of milk replacer and gaining almost 1/2 lb a day. I feed her every two hours, and she drinks till her belly is about to pop. In fact, I put a hernia belt on her because she was stretching her belly so much, it was stretching the umbilical opening. It might be ok to take it off tomorrow.

That is a fine balancing act, with a baby and a mom with low milk production. You don't want baby to go without, but you also want to make baby nurse from mama to stimulate as much milk production as possible. You can try to cut back either volume or intervals, and continue to weigh her daily. I wouldn't let her weight gain drop below 1/4 lb per day while you're trying to get mama's milk production ramped up. And you may have to do it for a few to several days. By then you should know if you need to go back to higher amounts of bottle feeding or if mama can handle it from there. :)

Best of luck!

I'm currently giving her about 5 oz milk and about 1 of yogurt every 3 hours during the day, but would really love to get her to feedings every 6 hours as soon as possible. She does nurse from Mom, but clearly not getting much from her. I've given Mom a bag of herbal supplement, but she's been overweight, is a maiden and I'm just not sure she's going to have milk for this baby. So, at 2 weeks of age, what would the recommendation be for intervals of feeding and amounts? Would it be okay to try dropping the amount she gets and hoping Mom fills in the rest? She's been doing well and I don't want to upset things, but 3 hourly feedings are starting to get old!........but of course, I'll do whatever it takes.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: toe trimmers...which ones?

I'll bet you get lots of opinions on this one - :o)

For my two cents I love a good set of by-pass rose pruners,
Corona 1/2" or 3/4"<- I can keep a great edge on them.

My second favorite would be the Fiskars that have the
compound action -- easier on the hands.

Glad to have you in the Alpaca world !! With Fiber boys you
will definitely have less stress as you learn alpaca body language
and behaviors.

When is the forth one coming? (snicker)

Hi Caryn, I looked up the link for the toe nail trimmers the pair that
most farms seem to use are the item no.1107-a listed as the magic toe
shears, you may, after looking at these, try to find a pair of pruning
shears at your local garden store they may work and be less expensive.
Good luck with your new family members.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] toe trimmers...which ones?

Hi Caryn,

We use the small "magic toe shears", the ones for $19.95. The other ones are far too big and cumbersome. Many small, local feed stores carry them, as sheep and goat farmers use them to trim their animals' feet as well. They are also at Jefferslivestock.com for $17.95, and at valleyvet, com for $19.95 with free freight, however at valleyvet you must order at least $60 worth of merchandise or they charge a $6 fee.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] toe trimmers...which ones?

Caryn:

Our favorite ones are like the model 1107A on  the link you posted.  We’ve also found that most high-quality rose trimmers (the ones with one sharp blade and a solid other side) work well on more difficult toenails.

If you are like us you’ll try several kinds before selecting the one that works best for you.
