I do store hay in a barn, but I always put it up on wood pallets to keep them dry on the bottom. Even if you think your floor is dry, the hay will draw moisture! If you have bats or birds above, then a cover just over the top will keep dropping off the hay, without holding in moisture.

We store our hay in a large barn built specifically for hay. We also keep up to a week's worth in the alpaca barn.

I know many people that store their hay in a section of the barn that their alpacas share.

We also put down plastic or tarps then pallets under the hay stacks.Helps with air flow/moisture issues,that can cause mold.

The metal carports make great pasture shelters too.I have 3 out in the pastures that are away from the main alpaca barn.I store 20 bales in the alpaca barn,the other hay is in the horse barn.No animals are locked in this barn normally.

o.k. that is the next thought that I had! I didn't realize that was a big worry. I will keep that in mind! I was thinking having the hay in the back of the barn would help keep the barn warmer....but a fire is NOT a good way to heat the barn! Thanks for the explanation.
