Re: [AlpacaTalk] hen- sour crop

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! My hen is doing much better
and has moved back out to the henhouse.

We had but I couldn't find activated charcoal, we had but I couldn't
find my goldenseal. But I did visit the website you suggested, Flossie,
lots of great info there!

So I remembered that I had been giving Self-Heal tea to one of our cats
who was on the brink of death, he hadn't eaten for days and was just
getting worse. The tea fixed him right up! So in addition to the
mineral oil, water, yogurt that I was giving my hen, I added Kyo-Green
and the self-heal tea. I'm not kidding, within 2 hours, her breath was
no longer bad, her poop was pretty close to normal, and she ate all of
the 1/2 cup of tabouli that I offered to her. :)

But now, I have another hen who isn't doing well. We just picked her
and another hen up from my daughter's house. Our other hens almost
immediately attacked her, she began limping and dragging one wing...
poor thing was very stressed out. So now she's in the bathroom till I
figure out if it's anything besides stress. I did give her 6 ml of
mineral oil and 5 ml of self-heal tea just for good measure. But she's
very warm, mouth breathing, and isn't interested in food or water.

We have separated the two meanest girls, so maybe tomorrow I'll try
reintroducing this new girl to the rest of the nice ones. If they
attack again I don't know what to do!

Brian,

Don't have a source for manufacturing, but you might check to see if a
manufacturer is willing to use Seacell blended with alpaca. I haven't
used it personally, but a lot of the knitting/spinning blogs/sites
rave about it. I would expect that Seacell would have similar
properties to Tencel, since it's made from the same process.

I introduced her to alpacas over 2 years ago and we have been talking about this idea ever since.

We have been visiting farms in CT, VT, and next in NH. Getting lots of ideas.
Some of bed and breakfasts too so we are close to the animals. We like that.

I was waiting for the DUMMY'S book for raising alpacas but I think I'll have to start a overall basic library for education and everyday workings of ranching/farming, building/barn, field, fencing, vet care, crias, etc - etc - all that is talked about on this great group.

I look forward to hearing/reading about all your experiences.

Ok, so this isn't about alpacas at all, but does anyone have more advice for a hen with sour crop/previously blocked crop?I gave her mineral oil, raw yoghurt, water, 5 drops GSE and water yesterday. Today I found her not much changed although her crop is smaller. A very long piece of poo which was obviously hers was in the pen. Long grass caused the initial blockage. But her crop is still very sour. I'm forcing water, mineral oil, and yoghurt today, and gave one dose of 6 ml water with 5 drops GSE to help with any infection in the crop. But her tail is still down, she doesn't want to eat, and she appears pretty depressed.Any suggestions besides surgery?Heather

Maybe she needs a bit of honey for energy? I have given my sick hens
honey in yogurt on a number of occasions and always seems to perk them up.

I used to use a lot of GSE until I experienced the amazing antibiotic
power of (real) goldenseal. Most Goldenseal on the market is not potent
and therefore folks do not have much success with it. I found a great
source with a tested high levels of the active alkaloids from Sleepy
Hollow Herb Farm. There are up here a bit north of me in NW Ga. Their
web site would be something similiar to their name. I highly recommend
it. As a holistic health practitioner I have started suggested to my
clients that they keep a supply of it on hand at all times. It is
perfectly safe to take internally and is effective against pathogenic
bacteria and yeast/fungus (candida), but does not disturb the good gut
bacteria. It can also be used externally on cuts, wounds, etc. Last
summer I cut the top of my finger nearly off with the mower.....ran in
the house bleeding all over the place; cold water, pour on the GS and
tape the finger tip back on and went back to finish mowing. Kept it
clean and goldensealed up and never got an infection even from that
nasty mower blade. It is also effective against the antibiotic
resistant staph that is running rampant (at least around here) and I
have used it to heal up a deep necrotic wound on my arm (likely brown
recluse bite). I put it on everything, both my dds and my animals.

I know you probably can't get it shipped in fast enough to help your
lady, but thought I would mention it for future references.

Good luck Heather.

Warmly, Janice
