Re: [AlpacaTalk] OB wire

Our wire, purchased from valleyvet.com is about 1mm or 1.5mm in
diameter. $12 for 11 yards! Free freight! I honestly have no idea how
many strands it is, it's out in the barn!

To trim the incisors, I start at the outermost set that needs
trimming. Usually only the first and second incisors need trimming,
so yes, it is necessary to do the outermost ones, then they're gone,
you automatically move onto the inner set and just keep sawing.

Fighting teeth need to be done one at a time for obvious reasons. :)

[AlpacaTalk] OB wire

OK friends, another question related to previous discussions. I got
some OB wire today in anticipation of teeth trimming. It is not what I
expected. It is very thick and is labeled "OB wire saw, 27 strand SS".
I cannot imagine even being able to get this stuff between those 2
bottom teeth to trim them down. Do you do both teeth at the same time?
And/or is this the wrong stuff? The feed store said it is the only OB
wire they have ever had and that people use it to saw off horns.

Do I have the right stuff?

Thanks! Janice in NW GA

[AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.

<<<<Good, glad you checked the bag. You should be just fine feeding it. I'll
tell you one thing about it though, I breathed it in all summer long every
morning when I feed the girl alpacas their grain (it was mixed in with
the grain
but still is dusty) and I got asthma towards the end of the summer. Don't
know if its related, but I haven't had asthma in over 30 years.
>>>>

Sorry to hear about the asthma, Susan. Not fun. I tried wearing a face
mask when I was dusting the chix pen and house with it - couldn't do it.
It made my glasses fog up and I couldn't breath and and and. I just
took it off and tried not to actually inhale deeply if there was a cloud
of dust. Actually the old duster i was trying to use was so slow and
frustrating that I just started throwing it around by handfuls! The
duster was just making clouds of extremely fine white dust and didn't
seem to really be sticking to anything.

Do you dump your feed in cans and then mix with the DE? I believe I
recall you or someone else here saying they just throw it on the hay?

One interesting thing I read at the Perma Guard site was that if you mix
it in with feed it will actually increase the digestibility and
absorption of the feed; explaining that most feed has molasses which can
cause the pellets to clump together, by adding the DE, it will coat each
pellet causing them to separate into individual pellets that the
digestive juices can totally surround and get more out of each pellet.
I thought that was interesting. I dumped some in with the chix feed as
I was filling their feeder. I couldn't even see it, it seemed to just
disappear?

Warmly, Janice

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: hit and run posts

Hi Michael and everyone,
Well, I'm over it. I did feel personally insulted, but I'm over that,
too. I know I'm very blunt, and that is off-putting to some (many?).

As far as my screening skills go, I don't wish to limit membership or
discussion by not allowing members... So I've put together some
messages that are sent to those who request to join, which includes
the rules and a note on how to make sure your membership is approved.
LIke I said, I am pretty lenient. Requests do have to include name
and at least some reference to raising alpacas, or *something* that
shows an interest in them or fleece...

Heehee, I won't tell anyone you needle felt! Have you tried wet
felting? That works off a lot of steam, let me tell you! Sitting down
to the spinning wheel forces one to become quiet, too. I'm a very new
spinner, and at this stage it takes a lot of concentration and focus,
so that's good therapy.

I hope we can all move on from this past hiccup. I will be editing
those rules pretty soon to include the thing about not posting "Go
look at my web page" type of links in message posts.

Stay warm, everyone!
Heather

Hello Heather... I did not realize someone called you heartless.
Resorting to name calling just gets us nowhere. I understand the link
issues and must admit when I saw it I was a little hesitant to link
out and try it but relied upon your outstanding screening and took the
leap.

OK, now I'm a guy admitting this so keep it between you and me. When
something irritates me I reach for the felting needles, a little fiber
and start poking those needles into the felt. Heck after one or two
misadventures into my fingers, why I just quiet right down. After all
it takes a good deal of concentration to get those band aid wrappers
open and applied correctly. Oh how I envy those who felt and don't
wear band aids!

Thanks for the reply and we do appreciate your screening skills.
