[AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.

<<<<Good, glad you checked the bag. You should be just fine feeding it. I'll
tell you one thing about it though, I breathed it in all summer long every
morning when I feed the girl alpacas their grain (it was mixed in with
the grain
but still is dusty) and I got asthma towards the end of the summer. Don't
know if its related, but I haven't had asthma in over 30 years.

Sorry to hear about the asthma, Susan. Not fun. I tried wearing a face
mask when I was dusting the chix pen and house with it - couldn't do it.
It made my glasses fog up and I couldn't breath and and and. I just
took it off and tried not to actually inhale deeply if there was a cloud
of dust. Actually the old duster i was trying to use was so slow and
frustrating that I just started throwing it around by handfuls! The
duster was just making clouds of extremely fine white dust and didn't
seem to really be sticking to anything.

Do you dump your feed in cans and then mix with the DE? I believe I
recall you or someone else here saying they just throw it on the hay?

One interesting thing I read at the Perma Guard site was that if you mix
it in with feed it will actually increase the digestibility and
absorption of the feed; explaining that most feed has molasses which can
cause the pellets to clump together, by adding the DE, it will coat each
pellet causing them to separate into individual pellets that the
digestive juices can totally surround and get more out of each pellet.
I thought that was interesting. I dumped some in with the chix feed as
I was filling their feeder. I couldn't even see it, it seemed to just
disappear?

Warmly, Janice
