[AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.
<<<<Janice, what brand is it? My feed store carries one that comes in a
brown
bag like a paper bag from the grocery store, only 25 lbs. It didn't say food
grade on it either and I went through the same thing you did. I finally
called the mfg. and they convinced me. It is VERY dangerous, deadly to
feed pool
grade DE to your animals, you did the right thing in holding off. Let me
know the brand and I'll check with my feed store on it.

Thanks Susan. I had to go stand on my head again in the broken freezer
that I store my animal feed in. The dern bag is too heavy for me to
lift out to look at the label!
It says: EP Minerals, an Eaglepicher Co.
Celatom - this is in big letters and I think must be the
brand name. I can't really tell. Comes from Reno, NV.
Then it says under uses - fillers, extenders, conditioning agents,
catalyst something, and some other similar type stuff. Again nothing
about swimming pools! But also nothing on the front about food grade.
On the back under ingredients it says "diatamacious earth" then it says
it can be added to animal feed as an "inert carrier" at no more than 2%
of the total feed.
So I feel sure this is what it is supposed to be. I was just surprised
by all the industrial sounding uses and got paranoid. Not to mention
that the bag also mentions it is a carcinogen! And not to breathe.
This is also in a brown paper bag but is a 50# bag - my word it will
take me the rest of my lifetime to use it all up, so it better be ok to
use. I also plan to use it to store grains, flour, and beans for
human consumption.
After reading Perma Guard's website with the very thorough description
and explanation I began to again question if I had the right stuff.
So that is why I am asking if there is really a difference in brands, or
if this is just marketing hype; and was curious what all of you that use
DE have come across.
It probably is like beet pulp; not that easy to find and you get
whatever your local feed store carries or can order.
Perma Guard's website is very informative. Among other things it talks
about the difference between the crystalline form - very dangerous and
deadly to one's lungs; and the amorphous type which is benign and not
dangerous to breathe.
Thanks again for checking,
Warmly, Janice
