[AlpacaTalk] Educational Opportunities for alpaca owners who want the very best care for their alpacas...available in No. California!

Hello Fellow Alpaca Enthusiasts,

Just a reminder there are only nine more days until the presentation of this
valuable Steve Hull seminar and registration is still open.

participants will find themselves able to take the information they receive
and apply it to personal experiences and "I wish I had known or remembered."
situations.

At the end of the day, you will have added to your education by gaining a
new, or better, understanding, of Alpacas - All Things Considered. You
will. learn about sound alpaca herd management practices and preventative
care through the presentation of the following topics: camelid
characteristics and physiology, essentials of nutrition, vaccination
protocol, parasite control, forage and pasture management, current disease
threats/issues, and the cycle of breeding/birthing/weaning.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

Thanks Heather,
I thought maybe you had posted on alpacasite since you mentioned that you had a post from another moderator group.

Perhaps Montana reconsidered if brought to their attention that they would be competing with a business and they aren't themselves a business? Who knows but it is too bad that we can't send samples there. I intended to do so this week or next.

Thanks for posting information.

Sincerely,
Margie

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

I wondered this too, how testing alpaca fleece can be different from
sheep wool. I haven't written back to ask her yet. Here is Brenda's
info if anyone would like to pursue this further:

Brenda Robinson
blr@montana.edu
406-994-2100

Montana Wool Lab
MSU-Bozeman
P.O. Box 172900
Bozeman, MT  59717-2900

I'm also not sure how they misunderstood my questions regarding their
service and testing alpaca fleece, since in my first sentence I said I
was an alpaca breeder looking for options to our current testing
providers!

And I didn't post on Alpacasite, haven't posted there for years. And I
rarely read any posts there either.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

Thank you Heather. Did you post this on alpacasite?

I will check out the various possibilities. Too bad Montana can't work with alpaca breeders to test the fiber. Interesting that they say they can only do wool and I assume she means only sheep breeds. Wonder how the setup would be different from testing sheep wool vs alpaca.

Very interesting.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

Hi Margie,
Yes, I did write to Montana State about their testing services, and I
was told that they did take samples from the public. I told them I was
an alpaca breeder and that many other alpaca breeders were looking for
alternatives to the current providers....

I just received this email from Brenda at MSU:

> Heather,
>

> producers.  In addition we do have a OFDA 2000 that we lease that was

So unfortunately, MSU is not available to us, and the fee of $15 per
sample for Ian Watt's OFDA 2000 test is outrageous, in my opinion. The
OFDA 2000 does not measure the percentage of medullated fibers as the
OFDA 100 does. Yocom-McColl is charging $9.50 per sample for the OFDA
100, and still only $7.50 per sample for the Sirolan test.

If you are a member of the Ideal Alpaca Community, apparently there is
a big combined testing result for the same $7.50 per sample. I don't
know all the details of that.

And finally, Ian Watt's site, if you have more money than sense:

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

Heather, are you the one that shared about testing at a college in Montana?

Sorry, I can't find the emails in my files nor on alpacasite archives. I have been in Nebraska for the last 3 weeks and lost track of everything not directly concerning my mom.

Thanks,
Margie

[AlpacaTalk] Other alpaca discussion groups

My, my, my. I have had my hand slapped yet again for daring to speak
the truth and call attention to the childish and vindictive behaviour
toward me by a certain moderator of another group.

People, I think we're all adults. We don't need to be told what is
intended by text written. We can all decide for ourselves. For a
moderator to say that something I have written is insulting,
argumentative, sarcastic, etc., etc., is demeaning to me but also to
the readers, other members who are thinking adults. If speaking the
truth about a severely overpriced service is insulting or
argumentative, perhaps the person charging the exorbitant fees should
stop arguing and look at what the market will bear and stop arguing
about why we ought to be giving him our hard earned money when we can
get the same service for a fraction of his fee.

Something to think about. And tell your friends to bring their
discussions to this group! This is the one forum that really aspires to
be a true forum with free speech intellectual intercourse. No thought
control is practiced here!

Thanks and best regards,
