We purchased two of the square cedar fly traps and put them out two weeks ago. Useful Llama Items had them buy one get one free.

With only two weeks of experience, we think they are doing a wonderful job.  They are full of flies - more flies than we thought we had.  The number of flies on the pacas and llamas is decreasing each day.

The nice gentleman we bought them from suggested having OUTSIDE the barn to draw flies out of the barn rather than into it.

Overall - seems to be working.

The sticky tape about which I'm talking is a narrow twine-size tape - so narrow there's almost no room for flies. We are not privileged to have barn swallows - we have LOTS of sparrows and finches - and we've NEVER had a bird stuck on this tape.

I really do highly recommend it.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Flies making me nuts.....

Oddly enough, we're just starting to get a few flies this year.  Nothing like we had last year!  There are plenty of deer flies out on the poo piles, but so far very few ordinary house flies or stable flies.  A couple of horse flies have shown up in my van because I leave the doors open in the heat, but I haven't seen any in the barn.  Very strange.  I don't know if it's because we've had such prolonged spells of weather (first a long, dry spell, then a long, rainy spell, then another long, dry spell and now another rainy spell) that they haven't been able to establish as well.  The mosquitoes are another story! Oye!

Hi Dave,
I believe you are referring to the fly tape. Yes, we had great experience with it and no issues with birds getting trapped.

I actually prefer the stable fly traps below. They simply are hung and you don't have to do any winding and unwinding of the tape. They are extremely effective against the stable flies which are the little buggers that look like house flies, but bite.

I hang 4 or five around and in just a minute or two, I have 3 or 4 victims. The stinky traps are not effective against stable flies, however they are great at attracting "foul flies".

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Flies making me nuts.....

I had forgotten in my younger days....and that was a LONG time ago!  Mom used  one in the enclosed patio area.  We had a parakeet that had gotten loose and she flew right into it and it was a horrible thing.  We pulled so many feathers out of that poor bird trying to free her from it.  It leaves a gooey sticky on the feathers too.  We got it on our hands too.  :(

I wonder if any others on this site have experience with this product.   We love our barn swallows!

Hi, Dave -
The sticky tape about which I'm talking is a narrow twine-size tape - so narrow there's almost no room for flies. We are not privileged to have barn swallows - we have LOTS of sparrows and finches - and we've NEVER had a bird stuck on this tape.

I really do highly recommend it.

Jan,

My issue with the sticky tape is that barn swallows get stuck on it and cannot extricate themselves.
