Hi Dave,
I believe you are referring to the fly tape. Yes, we had great experience with it and no issues with birds getting trapped.
I actually prefer the stable fly traps below. They simply are hung and you don't have to do any winding and unwinding of the tape. They are extremely effective against the stable flies which are the little buggers that look like house flies, but bite.
I hang 4 or five around and in just a minute or two, I have 3 or 4 victims. The stinky traps are not effective against stable flies, however they are great at attracting "foul flies".
