Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: barn cameras

Yeah, but in order to spray paint our cameras one of them would record them doing it!

Just a word that someone said to me when I was discussing putting a camera up at my gate a few years ago and trying to figure out how to do it and still keep it out of the weather.   The person I was discussing it with was the Ag teacher at the local high school.   He mentioned that every teenage knows that all it takes is a can of spray paint to bypass a security camera!
That caused me stop that project.

How is that pesky neighbor these days Susan?

The larger the mass of water the slower it will freeze.
In the hard winter I set up a 35 gal barrel inside the horse shelter that only has tarps on the sides (we have no enclosed barns).    I use bungy cords to wrap old pieces of thick carpet around the barrel.   The combination of the larger mass of water, plus out of the wind, plus the extra layer tied around the barrel keeps the water from freezing.   If we have a long extended spell of below freezing both day and night I have to add the electrical water heater thing to keep it from freezing.  But if it is only freezing at night the wrapped barrel does the trick.
Then, for their comfort and enjoyment, we haul 5 gal buckets of hot water from the bathtub to top off their water
The alpacas and dogs drink out of 5 gal buckets; we just dump those and bring warm water from the house each morning and evening for them.   But the horses drink too much for us to do that for them 2x a day!

SUSAN OLSON****

How wonderful!
I have been wanting this sort of set up for the longest time.
Great peace of mind.
I constantly stress when I am away from home.....are the foxes getting my birds; are the alpacas ok; are the horses ok; are the Pyrs *really* watching everybody or snoring in the barn while the fox paces the fence line!....... but mostly IS THE HOUSE ON FIRE or being burglarized.....that is my biggest fear these days - home invasion.
Meth has taken over my piece of heaven :-(.
They jsut shoot the dogs and take what they want.
I am constantly worried every second I am away from home.
I'd want several inside the house as well Susan!
Instead what I have as an "all I can afford right now" option is the fake cameras from Harbor Freight.  Battery operated, with red light and the camera scans.   I have them mounted at all doors and at the entrance to all porches.
One day I will move up to the real thing.
Just got our first smart phone (used with no contract or phone plan - we can only use it with wi-fi) for my 14yo dd for Cmas.   We're slowly joining the 21st century.   Now I just have to figure out how to manage and use all this technology LOL.
