Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.

I feed about 1/2 cup per horse per day, mixed in with their pellet buckets.  If you have other farms nearby that have a lot of flies, the d.e. will cut down on yours but your animals will still attract flies from neighboring farms.

[AlpacaTalk] Re:Getting it together and need to know what to ask /Look for

Hi Carla,

Congratulations on your decision to get alpacas. I also agist my
alpacas at someone else's farm.

I have posted on my blog a list of hopefully helpful questions to ask
potential agistors.

Also, I think that the webcam idea is great, not only for you, but
potentially also for the farm as a marketing tool. There have been
many times when I'm at home and wishing that I could take a peek at
my alpacas to see them.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.

I just use the scoop that I feed pellets with.   I have used my hand but it is so drying to my skin I try not to use my hands.    We do feed free choice and they eat it when they want to . The cria's especially seem drawn to it right away.  Maybe they know they need the minerals in it.  At times I can't keep the containers full of DE  and other times it just sits there for weeks.  They seem to instintively know what their systems need.   I use it liberally on poo piles and on the ground after we clean and in their dust rolling beds for lice control.

<<< >>Do you have a favorite "tool" that you use/carry to disperse the
DE onto the piles?<<

I use old parmesean and/or non-dairy creamer containers. The former has
the nice sprinkler top that I use for over feed and the latter has a
wider opening that is still narrow enough to not make a mess but is
better for bigger areas (plus I get the large size creamer so I don't
have to refill as often).

Cheers,

Thanks Morgan, that's similiar to what I am using, however I am
impatient and find that I just toss it about with my hands when i am
covering a large area, like the floor of the chicken pen or the Pyr
pen. I started this week really giving the chicken pen a thorough
covering with the DE and throw some more in every day on the wet
spots. I wish I had been doing this all summer so I would have a
better idea how effective it is. But have decided to just start using
the stuff liberally so I will know whether it is worth it to buy another
bag when this one is gone. One the website I mentioned they said about
1/2 - 1 cup for a horse - that seems like a lot to me. We have only
been sprinkling over top of feed for horses and alpacas. I think these
folks said they leave out free choice for their livestock. Earlier this
summer I had accidently left a bowl of DE out while I went to do
something else and when I came back the little 5mo old black cria (are
they still called crias when they are this age?) had a white face <g> I
panicked thinking that couldn't be good for her, but then according to
this website I think that is what they do and say that the more the
better and that its effectiveness increases over time and consistent use.
Warmly, Janice
