[AlpacaTalk] RE: D.E.

<<< >>Do you have a favorite "tool" that you use/carry to disperse the
DE onto the piles?<<

I use old parmesean and/or non-dairy creamer containers. The former has
the nice sprinkler top that I use for over feed and the latter has a
wider opening that is still narrow enough to not make a mess but is
better for bigger areas (plus I get the large size creamer so I don't
have to refill as often).

Cheers,

Morgen Bowers>>>

Thanks Morgan, that's similiar to what I am using, however I am
impatient and find that I just toss it about with my hands when i am
covering a large area, like the floor of the chicken pen or the Pyr
pen. I started this week really giving the chicken pen a thorough
covering with the DE and throw some more in every day on the wet
spots. I wish I had been doing this all summer so I would have a
better idea how effective it is. But have decided to just start using
the stuff liberally so I will know whether it is worth it to buy another
bag when this one is gone. One the website I mentioned they said about
1/2 - 1 cup for a horse - that seems like a lot to me. We have only
been sprinkling over top of feed for horses and alpacas. I think these
folks said they leave out free choice for their livestock. Earlier this
summer I had accidently left a bowl of DE out while I went to do
something else and when I came back the little 5mo old black cria (are
they still called crias when they are this age?) had a white face <g> I
panicked thinking that couldn't be good for her, but then according to
this website I think that is what they do and say that the more the
better and that its effectiveness increases over time and consistent use.
Warmly, Janice
