I had to put two old horses down last year and it almost killed me. I had the pleasure of having them own me for almost all their lives. One was 28 and one was 31, the longest relationships I've ever had. With the 31 year old, I was preparing for that day for years and it still wasn't any easier. I really thought it would be, but it wasn't. I had to put her down in a very stressful situation one morning and an hour later the contractors arrived to start the first day's work on our bathrooms. I was forced to pretend I was okay all day.
We haven't lost an alpaca yet but that will be SO hard. They are all members of our family. We have no human children and I always tell people we inter-species adopt. : )
