Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Feed

I wonder how many times I have to keep repeating myself? The very
very small amount of wheat, oats, and barley in the pellet I feed is
only added as a binder to keep the feed in pellet form, rather than
crumbles. It is not a major ingredient. In addition, that very small
amount of wheat oats and barley is organic human grade mill end run
from Grain Miller's in Eugene, Oregon. Human grade. Yes, obviously
tested. Again, in the very off chance that the wheat oats barley was
contaminated, the amount the individual animals would ingest is
miniscule, since the amount in the feed itself is miniscule. It's not
like most feeds where you have 50% by bulk in corn or DDGS or lord
knows what else. Ours is more like less than 5% of the total
ingredients.

I would say the flax seed in our pellet is of more concern than the
tiny tiny amount of grain in our feed. And, I'm sure everyone knows
that we would prefer to have NO grain or grain product of any kind in
our pellet.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Feed

Hey Heather,

The distillers grains can hold mycotoxins in the
same way that any grain can, including the wheat, barley and oats that are
in your custom feed. I am sure that your mill only uses certified
mycotoxin free grain, just as the mill I get my feed from uses ingredients
tested mycotoxin free.

Thanks for the reference for custom
feed mills.  There were none that I could find listed for Ohio on
that website. We have a couple around here that upon investigation made me
nervous.  Since I have found a mill that does a fine job, I don't
need the list now, but someone else might, so I will keep the
reference.

While some might be interested in having a custom
feed mixed, finding a formula that is appropriate may prove a challenge.
Custom milling can be expensive as well, since you probably won't be able
to take advantage of the economies of mixing larger batches.

Having your own feeds mixed can be risky unless you know enough to
ask the right questions, such as what experience they have, what other
ingredients might be on site, what other feeds they mix, do they clean
equipment between each batch, is the same person going to be mixing your
feed each time, etc, etc.

Coming up with a formula and then
verifying with laboratory testing is also a cost that needs to be
considered. Since most of us would want to make large batches to keep
costs down, you may want to find other like minded folks that would be
interested in going in with you. But then there is the risk that somone
could claim that your feed is responsible for an alpaca becoming ill, so
you will need to consider special insurance to cover that risk.

Heather you have a great feed available, and so do I. Many others have
great formulas that are excellent for alpacas. That's a good thing! Viva
la difference!

Mycotoxins can be more concentrated in distillers grains than in
other feeds, making testing and monitoring key to utilizing these

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Feed

Heather you wrote:
"I have to tell you that I think it's
those people who dreamt up the
idea of feeding leftover garbage from
other processes as animal feed
are overthinking. Do you have any
idea how hard it is to make that
stuff a balanced feed? Please read
the paper at the Alpaca Research
Foundation website, if you haven't
already."

Well You know what they say... one man's trash
is another man's treasure!

Since Dr. Ihrlbeck does not address
Distiller's Grains or Wheat Middlings in the Alpaca Research Foundation
article, referring folks there is not appropriate to your argument,
however it is an excellent article, and a great one to read.

For those who are still interested here is some info and some sites for
additional information.

First is this excellent site that
provides easy to understand definitions of those abbreviations used
in all livestock feed nutritional analysis:
http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/livestock/dairy/facts/08-039.htm
Here are two definitions they provide:

Distillers' grains - the residual grains or byproduct
that contain the nutrients remaining after the starch from corn has been
fermented to alcohol. The concentration of these residual nutrients is
approximately 3x that found in the original corn.
Middlings - a byproduct of milling, it
consists of granular particles containing differing proportions of the
grain, endosperm, bran and gluten.

Here’s another site
that provides descriptors of many types of feed ingredients:
http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/ansci/livestoc/as1182-2.htm
Excellent Descriptor of different Yeast which is a commonly used
ingredient in feeds and probiotics
