Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Feed
Hey Heather,
The distillers grains can hold mycotoxins in the
same way that any grain can, including the wheat, barley and oats that are
in your custom feed. I am sure that your mill only uses certified
mycotoxin free grain, just as the mill I get my feed from uses ingredients
tested mycotoxin free.
Thanks for the reference for custom
feed mills. There were none that I could find listed for Ohio on
that website. We have a couple around here that upon investigation made me
nervous. Since I have found a mill that does a fine job, I don't
need the list now, but someone else might, so I will keep the
reference.
While some might be interested in having a custom
feed mixed, finding a formula that is appropriate may prove a challenge.
Custom milling can be expensive as well, since you probably won't be able
to take advantage of the economies of mixing larger batches.
Having your own feeds mixed can be risky unless you know enough to
ask the right questions, such as what experience they have, what other
ingredients might be on site, what other feeds they mix, do they clean
equipment between each batch, is the same person going to be mixing your
feed each time, etc, etc.
Coming up with a formula and then
verifying with laboratory testing is also a cost that needs to be
considered. Since most of us would want to make large batches to keep
costs down, you may want to find other like minded folks that would be
interested in going in with you. But then there is the risk that somone
could claim that your feed is responsible for an alpaca becoming ill, so
you will need to consider special insurance to cover that risk.
Heather you have a great feed available, and so do I. Many others have
great formulas that are excellent for alpacas. That's a good thing! Viva
la difference!
