Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: skin ointment

That was a definite concern! But I think Padre was just more prone to
it than others. I did keep a very close eye on the other boys in his
pasture, and in fact it wasn't Padre who cold-cocked me during the
belly sprays, it was another boy. So I was vigilant in preventing
transmission to others if at all possible.

I think any parasite can be transmitted to another individual, but if
they have a strong enough immune system or constitution, they won't
be affected. Have you ever had just one or two animals with a lice
infestation at shearing time? We sure have. Maybe 3 times in or 11
years of raising alpacas, we've had just 3 or 4 who have had lice.
Why don't the rest have them too, especially the others in the same
pasture? I don't know.

Same with the mites. In 2006, mites were rampant in the Northwest.
Ugh, it was wet and mucky, just awful. Seems everyone in the region
had mites. In fact we had some crias with terrible mites between the
toes before Padre came to our farm, and they were never in the same
pasture as him. Where did they even come from? I don't know that either.

And coccidia. We had a tough time with that in the Northwest in the
last couple of years. One animal would be quite sick from it, another
in the same pasture would have no symptoms at all.

Alright. Pics and narrative are at:
http://www.whitelotusalpacas.com/mites.html

This is my farm website.

I hadn't ever heard of Ellie's suggested treatment, that sounds like
it's definitely something to try next time I have to deal with this.
Hopefully never!

My final treatment was Frontline Top Spot for dogs, of course the
size for the largest dogs 132+ lbs. I drew this into a 6cc syringe
with no needle, just the syringe and applied an equal amount to the
topknot, shoulder, rump, chest, and "belly" areas. This was done once
a month.

Then, I sprayed with Ovitrol spray to all affected areas weekly. I
think I bought both from discountpetdrugs.com since it was convenient
and they had good prices. Shop around for the best deal, of course.

So, I hope this is informative for everyone. It sure was a painful
experience for both Padre and myself. It really pained me to see him
suffering with this condition.

I know my methods worked, Ellie's sounds very good, and I know
Nustock also works, although I only have personal experience with
using that with abscesses.

Best of luck!

A relatively inexpensive and very effective topical skin treatment is to use tubes of mastitis treatment, any brand, tho I like the one that contains penicillin for skins stuff. Most are made with an innocuous oil (sesame in one if I recall) and an antibiotic.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: skin ointment

For the area around the eyes I just put the Ovitrol on a cotton ball
and swabbed generously. With the Ovitrol, I forgot to mention, you
want the skin to be saturated. I'd say to the point of run-off but
you don't want to waste it, so just make sure it's good and wet. :)

And the Tamanu Oil really is a miracle treatment. It's 100% natural,
and the changes are irrefutable! I keep meaning to get pics of our
girl I mention on the web page. I don't have before treatment shots,
but she's still got a long way to go, so I can take some "before
completely healed" pics at least. She has a bald patch on her rump,
it's always been very dry and tight, and painful. Skin was very
flaky, very large thick flakes would come off.

Nustock didn't help much if at all for her condition. The Tamanu Oil,
though, really did help. She liked the way it felt going on, you
could tell because she would stop resisting and complaining when it
was being applied and rubbed in. And the hair has grown back over 30%
after only a few treatments over ... quite a few months. Weekly would
be best, but we don't always keep up with minor issues the way we
should.

thanks Heather!! what a sweet face Padre has - amazing to see the changes in his skin. How did you treat around his eyes?

i have been using tea-tree oil ointment and ivermec but it isn't doing enough - i bought two girls who appear to have lice (i didn't know it at the time) and altho i have everyone separated (mites and lice) i'm worried about treating them effectively.

It's been such a horrible winter, everything feels overwhelming.

Free Alpacas Newsletter- How to Profit from Alpaca Farming

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: skin ointment

Ok. I'm going through my photo library to find all pics of my boy
with the horrible mite condition. I will be putting together a quick
web page for this, to show how he looked when I got him, after
treating with Witches Brew (you'll be shocked) and after treatment
with Frontline topical and Ovitrol Spray.

I'll post the link in a bit, after it's posted. Should be maybe 20
minutes or so...
