Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: skin ointment

That was a definite concern! But I think Padre was just more prone to
it than others. I did keep a very close eye on the other boys in his
pasture, and in fact it wasn't Padre who cold-cocked me during the
belly sprays, it was another boy. So I was vigilant in preventing
transmission to others if at all possible.

I think any parasite can be transmitted to another individual, but if
they have a strong enough immune system or constitution, they won't
be affected. Have you ever had just one or two animals with a lice
infestation at shearing time? We sure have. Maybe 3 times in or 11
years of raising alpacas, we've had just 3 or 4 who have had lice.
Why don't the rest have them too, especially the others in the same
pasture? I don't know.

Same with the mites. In 2006, mites were rampant in the Northwest.
Ugh, it was wet and mucky, just awful. Seems everyone in the region
had mites. In fact we had some crias with terrible mites between the
toes before Padre came to our farm, and they were never in the same
pasture as him. Where did they even come from? I don't know that either.

And coccidia. We had a tough time with that in the Northwest in the
last couple of years. One animal would be quite sick from it, another
in the same pasture would have no symptoms at all.
