Hi Kathy,
The vets at the universities do not believe that this is a zoonosis virus, so that it does not infect other species. I have had numerous reports of humans, goats, sheep, horses and some dogs having similar respiratory infections.
I have been told that it is just that time of year, and that it is not the same virus.

Have you heard of a cause for this virus? Has there been any other animals or humans getting the virus? Souldnt the state vets get involved? In my Octiber national geographic magazine there was an artical about a virus in Brisbane Australia called Hendra, (upper respirtory) that killed horses and humans. Pretty intresting story about zoonosis. Im sure you could find it online if you wanted to read it.
Thank you for all of your work and info. I will go to that site as well as give it to our vet who is very intrested in this and wants to keep all of our animals safe.
I havent herd of any cases here in Alaska yet.

Just spoke to a "llama" person yesterday and they said that there were many animals that came home from the "Nationals" either with the upper respiratory virus or had subsequent out breaks on their farms.

No, there is no ban. I am getting my reports from people that are willing to report to me. I do realize that many people have not/are not reporting. However, as with any sampling I feel that this is a good idea of what is going on out there. I have also had reports from some vets and university hospitals.
One of the frequent outcomes with this virus has been stillborn and premature birth. Several of the university hospitals have reported that the virus had affected the placenta; causing it to be hard and cracked. With dams that are having severe respiratory issues crias have been stillborn due to lack of oxygen.
If you go to the site, www.AlpacaWatch. com. There is a page that has information on the virus. This includes a map of states that have had reported outbreaks and death. I will add that the number of outbreaks and deaths have decreased dramatically. It appears that the virus is about over for this year. There are still some reports of deaths coming in, but most are from infections that began in October. There are been almost no new outbreaks, reported, for the past couple of weeks.

the virus? Where are you getting your numbers? I was told that a
friends female in the her last couple weeks of pregnancy got the
virus and was treated and survived but the cria died, MN state. I am
very intrested in the states as i was planning on bringing up a young
stud.
