Re: [AlpacaTalk] Question from newbie

I think that these 3 species share the parasites. To my knowledge its cows that are more of a dead end host to some of these parasites that over run the 3 species we are discussing.I have had people claim horses are too but I have never delved into that literature.I keep my horses seperate,my goats have a yard of their own, alpacas are on seperate pastures.

Hi Maria,

I am no expert and have only had alpacas since 2008.  I also have goats.  I think there are definitely differents trains of thought.  Some say not to because goats are known for being parasite magnets.  Others say yes, because many parasites are species specific.  I think it comes down to what you want to do and how on top of parasite control you can be.

I have miniature dairy goats but I don't graze them with the alpacas.  The reason may seem trivial, but I don't want the alpacas spitting on them.  The worst is at feeding time and the alpacas can be so gluttony with spitting at each other and since the goats don't spit, nor have horns, I feel they have an unfair advantage.  Plus they are smaller than the alpacas.

I do graze my goats with a horse, though!

Hello,

My name is Maria and I am new to this site (and alpacas) I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here and learn from you all. My first question is....(there has been mixed responses about what I would "prefer" to do.) I have 2 seperate 3 acre paddocks, one is for sheep and goats. The other I can put my alpacas in. I really wanted them together thinking they mightlike more company. Some folks say that I should not put them togehter due to parasites. Does anyone here have input? I value your opinions!

Thank you,
Maria (VA)

Welcome to the world of Alpacas! Yes parasites can be an issue when running alpacas with sheep/goats.Other things to be considered are medicated feeds used with sheep/goats can be very deadly to alpacas.Feed for goats can be high in copper sheep/alpacas do not need extra added copper.Copper can build up and become toxic. On the other hand many people do run them together. If you choose to run them together fecals should be run often. If your goats are horned you could run into some serious injuries.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Question from newbie

Hi Maria and welcome!

As a general rule, we usually discourage mixing alpaca with goats/ sheep and other barnyard critters.. There are several reasons for this, one being a parasite distribution issue. Since alpacas have a "communal" dung pile, it makes cleaning and keeping alpacas healthier with minimal effort. Goats and sheep "go" all over the place which distributes potential worm infested manure about.
Another issue is if you have goats and sheep with horns...

Alpacas generally prefer the company of their own specie, and they know the difference...

In my opinion, alpacas need to be in a group by themselves.

I hope this helps a little.
