Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Treats

As an aside to this topic, we have learned NOT to bring treats into the pasture anymore when having guests over to see the alpacas or they get accidentally spit on!  ; )

Dave - humans are vegetarians (according to how we classify teeth) and a lot of them subsist on a carnivorous diet, as dogs can also subsist healthily on a properly made vegan dry food.  We feed our dogs chicken-based dry food though.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Treats

Heather - would you share the recipe for your dog/alpaca treats?  One of my friends made some vegan cookies that were delicious and full of good things like cranberries, apples, raisins, etc.   I have to admit I couldn't eat them all so I shared some with the alpacas - they loved them!   We also give them little baby carrots from the small packages - that is one of their favorite treats.  They love all horse treats, too but you have to be careful with the size as some of them are too large and have to be broken up.

Yes, this particular recipe is also wheat and corn free. It does have rye flour, though. You wouldn't believe how crazy the alpacas were over them! I really do need to get these produced and sell them - as alpaca treats!

Sorry, I forgot to point out that they are treats, not an entire diet. So I really see no problem with a dog eating a vegan treat or diet supplement.

Heather,

Why would anyone wish to feed a carnivore a vegan diet?!  Is it because the humans oppose animal use, or because they think dogs can subsist, healthfully, on such a diet.  I am just curious.

I also made some vegan dog treats, but the little dog wouldn't touch them. I'm not going to give the recipe because I'm sort of planning to start a side biz making them. :) But, the alpacas loved them as much as fresh fruit!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Treats

Dave,

I wasn't feeding a carnivore a vegan diet, and dogs are omnivores, anyway. I waas making vegan treats, simply because there were no animal products in them. No butter, no cheese, no meat, no egg. I made them this way because many dogs have food allergies to particular animal products, and I was making something that had none of the allergenic ingredients in them.

However, those threats were full of really great ingreds, full of EFAs from flax and other seeds as well as other healthful foods.
