Re: [AlpacaTalk] dilute gray

Hi Wendy,   Sorry I've not responded.   Crazy busy with buying an internet retail business in December!    What were we thinking?

Dilute gene is a separate characteristic in the color genetics.    If both parents carry it, offspring will not be gray or black....but will be fawn/brown.     Only way to know an animal carries it is looking at it's parents and their offsprings......and at the animal's personal pairings and offspring.    Best way to understand it is to look at a big name gray male that has produced many blacks/grays and it's offspring.     Look at the black or gray females it was bred to.......    Knowing that two dilutes will not produce gray/black, you can start to identify in many cases....who is dilute or not.

I'm not at all explaining this well.......Andy Merriweather has great articles on it, but I didn't see them on his site?

If you have further questions.....I should have more time after next week and could look at specific animals with you and explain it better.

Have a great New Years!
