[AlpacaTalk] Any non-US breeders on this site?

I'm just curious if there are any other members of this group living outside
of the U.S.? I have no hidden agenda, just making small-talk and
interested in knowing a bit about the folks that belong to this group. I've
belonged to this group since it was started, but there has never been much
in the way of posting.

If anyone is interested, my wife (Kathy) and I farm about 100 of our own
alpacas plus another 25 that are just visiting here on their way to Europe.
We are very much full-time in the alpaca business and just started to do our
own shearing. Our alpacas give birth all year round, although we take a
two-month break in May and June (our winter). Even those plans don't always
work as we sometimes forget to leave that window open when we agree to agist
pregnant females belonging to other breeders.

I look forward to hearing from anyone, within or outside the U.S.

All the best to you and yours in 2008.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: AOBA shenannigans?

Well, the "statement" was actually a tongue in cheek speculation, but I
still don't understand why AOBA took away our magazine subs, ad why
advertising in those special pubs are so damned expensive. And why only
the rich get the membership info electronically. Elitist BS, it looks
to most of us.

Best,
Heather

Heather,

It has nothing to do with making a profit but rather that by definition
some income is taxable and some isn't. Your comment about the "real
intent" is unfair and untrue. If you have an interest in the truth, check
out the alpaca politics site where Amy McCroskie spelled it all out and
answered everyone's questions. Better yet, contact Amy personally to find
out the details. I'm sure she will be glad to fill you in until the letter
goes out to the membership.

I dunno, it seem to me that AOBA is a non-profit, created to benefit
members and the alpaca industry as a whole. If they're making too much
money, maybe they could give us back our subscription to Alpacas
Magazine, for one, and maybe make the ads in the FRG and Herdsire
Edition more affordable for us smaller breeders.... And maybe also give
those of us who don't have the $5k+ for benefactor status access to the
membership in electronic form as well.... if this really is about "too
much income."

Or maybe the real intent was to make salaried positions for those hand
picked to head up this new for-profit organization. Now there's a good
use of our dues and fees! Anyone else feel a bit used and taken by this
development?

Several weeks back I remember seeing "Alpaca Livestock Company" under
the listings for new corporations in the Tennessean Newspaper. After
reading several posts on this subject - I understand why they did
this. Makes sense to me, but that is my opinion and I haven't been
in the business very long.
