Re: [AlpacaTalk] Summer Heat

Well, its a lot cooler where you are and our alpacas are fine.  They have shade but lay out in the 104-106 degree heat here in So.Cal. and it drives me crazy - you know, the "dead alpaca syndrome".  I still get a start when I see one off alone like that.  We have sprinklers on $25 battery-operated timers (Home Depot, Lowe's) attached to the hose that go off belly-high five times a day and that really helps them out.  Those carport awnings for $120 at Home Depot provide lots of shade while letting the breezes in.  I never ceases to amaze me how strong and adaptable these animals are.

Just curious - has anyone HAD an alpaca who died of heat stroke?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Aggressive male

Laura,

I'm so sorry for your loss and that you had to come to this conclusion.  I know you didn't take the matter lightly.  You may see this behavior again in raising your alpacas in the future and please know that with a little time and patience it can be fixed.  Unfortunately, you did not have that option and chose the best scenario for the safety of your family.  If you ever have a young male "bump" you from behind, please remember this male and bop him one before he has a chance to get this bad.  It is really horrifying to me that a breeder would have the nerve to sell an animal like this - I just do not believe he just picked up this behavior at your place and never exhibited it with them.  I think you should go after them for his purchase price, especially since your vet witnessed the behavior.  My sympathy goes out to you and your family - hang in there and enjoy playing with the other alpacas that were in with him that are now having a much more peaceful life.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Summer Heat

Our alpacas also like to sunbathe in the sweltering heat, even when the sprinklers are on. Once in a while we'll see a few at the sprinkler, but mostly they're sunbathing or in the stalls eating hay or napping. I'd say ours split the time between the sun and the stalls.

Around the barn they all have access to shade, the barn, fans and two swamp coolers running in the barn. A few cria and older gals like laying in front of the coolers but more than half of them are out sun bathing! What's up with that? Am I the only one really hot? I have been worried about them and the heat but they seem quite fine.

Well, I'm just so sorry you were in this position at all. It's not a pleasant choice to have to make. And I do agree with whoever said it, some animals are crazy, as some humans are crazy. It may not have been anything to do with his prior handling, but possibly his change of circumstances may have sent over the edge.

Well Carolyn,
I think we should stop being worried.  They seem fine.  I could not believe they were sun bathing as I ran around trying to keep them cool.  Bet they were laughing at me too.

I'm in Utah here.  It's been in the 100's here too.  Mine have access to the barn, with a through breeze. However it's a very hot breeze.  they have no air or swamp cooler. (sigh)  most of the time they prefer to be out in the sun, in the pastures.  go figure.  They seem fine.  I do hose them down, on their under sides, whenever possible.  some like it and some don't.  I sure do worry about them getting too hot, especially the prego's that are due  very soon, and the new born's.

Tooth grinding is often a sign of pain. He may have had a condition of some kind that caused him pain and could account for the aggression... Did you plan to have a necropsy done? I guess you know the cause of death, but it may shed some light into any health issues he may have had.

Best wishes to you,

Heather

Thanks for the condolences.  Yes, we had hoped to use him for breeding in the future.   We still have the two younger males that we hope to use someday.  He had a beautiful fleece and size on him.  Wonderfully straight back and legs.

The grinding of his teeth really got to me.  We had a male guinea pig that would grind his teeth when agitated and that is what it reminded me of.

I haven’t found anything on it.  Is the grinding common?
