Re: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Cria

We shear all huacaya cria in the spring because that cria fleece is just too darn hot to bear all summer long.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca treats

My females get supplement; my males don't.  But, as I indicated, it took several years before one of my alpacas would touch a carrot.  However,  once one tastes one and enjoys it, the others learn really fast!  As for windfall apples, they prefer the apples to supplement.  Some of them will wait patiently beneath the tree until something drops, and then it's a spit-fest to see who gets it.  And I didn't need to teach them to denude my blackberry bushes; they seem to know those are good without being coaxed (drat!)

Do you folks who get your alpacas to enjoy carrots also feed grain? I'd love to be able to use carrots, but my alpacas just turn up their noses at the nice little slices I've made--even hiding them in a handful of grain--they' ll manage to eat the grain and leave the carrots behind.
Thanks.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Cria

I had one last year that we sheared at 6 days. As far as I know, the shearer used the same blades he did with the adults. Cria and Mom did fine........I was a mess! Before she was shorn, I did rub the outside of a cria coat all over her...vigorously. It was mid-May and I figured she might still need a coat for at least a few nights. Mom was fine with it and her fiber is so much more useable than when they don't get shorn. I really think that whoever said, "If they're born, they're shorn" hit the nail on the head.

We are trying to develop a plan of action in shearing cria. We have tipped a few with some result but this year we would like to completely shear their bodies. We had a cria that broke her leg last year. They shaved her hip for surgery. Her fiber on that hip area is awesome. I wish we would have sheared her all over! This year the cria will be sheared.
What do you do at your ranches?
What age do you shear the cria.
What equipment do you use? Oster? Andis? Other
What blades do you use?
Do you just shear their bodies or necks too?

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Cria

Hi Robin, I have never sheared a cria but I found out yesterday when all my alpacas were sheared that my Andis dog clippers with a number 10 blade worked well on those felted necks that the shearers could not go through and left just enough fiber to cover their skin. I imagine they would work well on crias.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Hijacked question about Alpaca Treats

Randy,

What is "do the beans in the baggie test to determine if anyone has it" ?  What are you looking for?  We have a lot of sand in our paca pastures and wondering if there is something we should be watching or checking for because of that.  Thanks

Marsha

Hi CJ.

I'm with everyone else as far as the usual treats. Apples, carrots, herbs, mulberry leaves, etc. I also grow wheatgrass in flats and I can not get it into the pasture fast enough for them. Since we are on dry lot, it may be the moist, fresh green that they love.

Also because we are on sand we give Sand Clear whenever it is called for. I do the beans in the baggie test to determine if anyone has it and then Sand Clear cookies are their favorite. I'll attach a link for the ones we make. Their healthy and made from all their favorite things, so usually everyone gobbles them up, a day or two and they are gone. You could make the same cookie without the Sand Clear too.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Silly alpacas

Hi Janice,

I know what you mean about the joy.
My alpaca boy herd of 37 were sheared on Friday morning.
After I opened the gate to let them go, they exploded in gallops, pronks and leaps. Cedric the suri, galloped so hard he almost ended up in a summersault...lol
It was so lovely to watch them.

Next will be the girl herd...they don't get quite as silly as the boys...maybe.
