[AlpacaTalk] hen- sour crop

Ok, so this isn't about alpacas at all, but does anyone have more
advice for a hen with sour crop/previously blocked crop?

I gave her mineral oil, raw yoghurt, water, 5 drops GSE and water
yesterday. Today I found her not much changed although her crop is
smaller. A very long piece of poo which was obviously hers was in the
pen. Long grass caused the initial blockage. But her crop is still very
sour. I'm forcing water, mineral oil, and yoghurt today, and gave one
dose of 6 ml water with 5 drops GSE to help with any infection in the
crop. But her tail is still down, she doesn't want to eat, and she
appears pretty depressed.

Any suggestions besides surgery?

Hi Bill,

We are in Creswell, just below Eugene. We will be at
the EVAA show as well. Heather is the fleece show
coordinator and my mom Sheri Hewitt is the Show
Coordinator. you should definitely enter your fleeces
if for no other reason but to get your feet wet! We
would love to have you come out to our farm for a
visit and get to know our new alpaca neighbors!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] New to group - fill my brain!

Pleased to meet you Bil! I'm in Creswell, feel free to stop by any
time! And definitely enter those fleeces! And everyone, feel free to
enter the EVAA Marketplace Fleece Show, (of which I am the fleece show
superintendent this year). I don't think the notices have gone out yet,
but we're extending the deadline to the following week, which would be
forms postmarked by June 7th, and mail in fleeces must be received by
me by June 15th. We have the lowest entry fee around, only $25 per
fleece!

I apologise for all the exclamation points, but sometimes they're
needed. :)

Welcome!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] New to group - fill my brain!

I'll introduce myself as well.

We are new to alpacas, and currently own 2 that we are having agisted
until we purchase our new property. We should be moving to our new
property at the end of June or first part of July.

We are in the Southern Willamette Valley in Oregon, and look forward to
getting involved with EVAA and other organizations. (even contemplated
entering fleece in the Alpaca Marketplace and Fleece Show in Eugene just
for fun this summer, but we only have a few days to make that decision.
:) )

Looking forward to learning from everybody.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] New to group - fill my brain!

Hi Brian,
Glad to have you aboard! And welcome to all our new members!

At this time, as you can see from our membership numbers, AlpacaTalk is
a small group so we have discussions in fits and spurts. Hopefully,
with more and more people joining daily, we'll have lively
conversations daily!

So far, I haven't had to do any real "moderation." I feel it's not
necessary with adults. There have been heated discussions here, not too
long ago, with some strong points of view and even some strong words
posted. There were even a few posts that were quite rude and negative
toward myself (gasp!). ;> But no one was banned, no one lost posting
privileges, and all was well. True, a few people left or threatened to
leave, but I stood my ground in the name of free speech. Censorship,
even of negative words about me, goes against my grain.

So, while I think everyone needs to be an adult both in posting and in
their response to posts, I'll say we all do quite well. For example,
instead of saying "I think you're stupid and wrong," perhaps one could
say "I disagree with you and here's why." But even if someone tells me
they think I'm stupid and wrong, well, they're entitled to their
opinion. And guess what, the more "real" posts you see from people, the
more you see who you do and don't want to do business with, right? So
it all works out in the end. At least that's what they say. :)

So have fun, and post away!

Heather

[AlpacaTalk] New to group - fill my brain!

Hi AlpacaTalkers,
I just signed up and look forward to learning more here.

I've been "in" alpacas since 2001 and so lots of things in the
industry including, raising alpacas for show, breeding, boarding,
brokering, shearing (Pacific NW), retailing, wholesaling... lots of
stuff!

But there's always more to learn so here I am. Learn me!

On the top of my brain today is that I'm researching a new North
American supplier of an alpaca blend sock yarn. I want the 2nd fiber,
after alpaca to be an eco-friendly "natural" fiber. Not acryllic,
cotton, bamboo or viscous...as none of them are really eco-friendly
(e.g., low pollution in processing) from what I've learned.

Regards,
-Brian
