Permit me to answer in Dutch (excuse any mistakes, please---it's been 27 years since I lived in the Netherlands). I will then explain in English, as well.
Volgens mij is er iets met het binnenoor aan de hand. Het evenwichtsorgaan (de halfcirkelvormige kanalen) zorgt voor het evenwicht en zit in het binnenoor. Als het binnen korte tijd voorbijgaat, heeft het waarschijnlijk iets met de kristallen (die "otolieten" of "oorstenen" worden genoemd), de haarcellen en de vloeistof in het binnenoor (endolymfe) te maken. De oorstenen buigen de haartjes en laten de hersenen weten of men stilstaat of zich bewegt (en in welke richting). Soms komt een oorsteen tegen een haartje te liegen en veroorzaakt vertigo (draaisensatie); het steen kan losgeschud worden, en de sensatie van draaien kan ophouden. Oorontstekingen kunnen dit veroorzaken, b.v. virale, en snel voorbijgaan.
Translation: In my opinion, it has something to do with the inner ear. The semicircular canals, which account for our sense of balance, are found in the inner ear. If it passes after a short period of time, it probably has to do with crystals (otoliths), hair cells and the endolymph, a gelatinous fluid in the inner ear which apprise the brain of ones position and movement in space. Sometimes, one of these otoliths can become lodged up against a hair cell and cause one to have vertigo (a sensation of spinning); this otolith can be dislodged and the sensation of spinning can pass. Ear infections can cause this, i.e. viral, and pass quickly.
