Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Feed

Hi everyone,

Regarding the Woodland Meadows Alpaca Pellets--

The nutritionist at our mill discussed alpaca
nutrition at length with Dr. Van Saun at Penn State,
Dr. Cebra at Oregon State, and Dr. Long at Oregon
State.

These pellets were thoroughly researched before
formulation and were designed so that we need to feed
only the the minimum amount of pelleted feed to the
alpacas. We feed 1 C to the girls and growing alpacas
up to 2 years old, and just a 1/2 C to the adult boys.

The feed is really amazing. One breeder with a very
famous grey herdsire sends her alpacas to be trained
at another farm. She wanted to pellets to be used
there and when this other breeder took a look at the
change in the fleece quality, he called us to get some
for himself!

We have a Color Champion male here that came to us a
few months ago. His fleece was fuzzy (still nice
zipper crimp), but really fuzzy. At shearing, the
healthier fleece holds together nicely into tight
bundles and there is no trace of fuzz. The color
saturation is better as well as the brightness.

We know that there are many people that have their own
formulation of pellets and not everyone will be using
ours. We also know that everyone will have the same
success we have since using these pellets. If nothing
else, we would just like to encourage everyone to get
the corn out of the alpaca feed. Corn gives them a
sugar rush and makes them more irritable and over
conditioned (especially with the amount of food people
give). It can also kill the microflora in the gut
since corn is acidic. Our main concern is the health
of our alpaca friends (and yours) and we have seen
wonderful changes in their health!

Hi Peter,
We used to feed the WABA pellets, but it was the declining quality that
prompted my mom to have the custom pellet milled. The fiber blowouts
alone were enough! Actually, that was what spurred it, and my nagging,
to get going on the project. We didn't expect the other general health
benefits.

Mom is the sole distributor of these pellets, they're available right
here from our barn in Creswell. Most of the EVAA membership uses them,
as well as many members of WABA and CABA.

Here's the label info:
