Re: [AlpacaTalk] Sick Cria Update

so sorry---------we also lost our first cria this year, 1st one in 5 years, he was born breech, i keep beating myself up, for not being able to save him,  I guess i'm  just lucky to still have the dam, she is doing better now, but still sad.  i knew it would be just a mater of time, before it was my turn.  I guess these things can happen. so sorry to hear when any one looses a cria, or any animal for that matter.

Darnit, I sent reply like an hour ago and it still hasn't shown up as far as I know...

Robin, I'm so sorry he didn't make it. After reading your post this morning all sounded like he was going to do fine. I hate this part of it all... You just never know. I know you did your best, and it seemed like you really were on the right track!

Best wishes,
Heather

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Sick Cria Update

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry. I meant to congratulate you on your luck this morning.

I lost a boy a couple of years ago at about 10 weeks. I took him to the vet, and got some prescriptions. He had scours but that cleared up, he had lost weight, but nothing was found in fecal cultures, and after his death nothing remarkable was found in his necropsy, except that his bladder was full, about 1 liter... and he had moderate hepatic lipidosis, which can be explained by his weight previous loss.

I'm so sorry. You do your best at all times, and you can never predict the future. Hugs to you,

Heather

Well our little guy did not survive. On necropy his stomach was full of fiber and he had a huge air bubble in his large intestine. Not sure what all that means. I did not ever see him chewing fiber other that the normal rough house play the cria's do. Very sad for us all.

Hi Robin,
My first thought is- have you seen him eating fiber off of his momma or anyone else?  If he is and/or if he is starting to eat solid food (probably at his age) he could be impacted.  I would get the vet out today and not wait on this one.  Little ones this age crash so quickly- good luck and call me if you want!

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Sick Cria Update

Hi Robin,

I understand your reluctance to run up a high vet bill- we have goats, alpacas, poultry, dogs and cats and you can bet a vet could make a living at our farm, alone.  Having said that, I still think you should call one.  When I know what the problem is, and feel comfortable treating it, it works out and I save money.  BUT, these little ones are unpredictable and don’t show anything wrong until there is a LOT wrong, sometimes.  I hope he is alright and gets through this.  Good luck to him and you!

Our little guy made it through the night. He is still weak, still drinking water. Walking around a bit very wobbly.
