RE: [AlpacaTalk] Skinny girl

We fed orchard grass hay and alfalfa hay very generously.  Supplemented ours with camelid feed, calf manna and a cup of grain for gestating and lactating horses.    Our girl is fed by herself so nobody else can steal her food and she is fed twice a day………with hay free fed 24/7.

Good luck with your girl.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Poor little thing.

I don't worry about foaming if they're chewing cud. Some of our alpacas get foam at the sides of the mouth while chewing cud, others don't. I have had crias work up a good foam while chewing milk curds they burp up!

What concerns me more than foam is liquid dribbling that is clearly not intentional spitting. I have a girl who had this for a while, and she showed no other symptoms of any kind. But there would be pools of green water on the ground where she cushed, and sometimes it would be on the backs of her friends. I treated her with probios and 1/2 tsp of baking soda to neutralize excess acid in the gut. We lost a girl once to a perforated ulcer, and I don't like to take chances on that happening again. This treatment cleared up the green dribbles, in just a few days.

I'm not sure if this will be of any help! But, probios is always helpful. Maybe your girl just needs more feed than others? Or, maybe she's just very slim naturally? I had a girl who was slightly overconditioned, normal height, and only 102 lbs at 2 years old.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Introduction and a Question

Hi Jacqueline:
Use the same precautions with your alpaca as you would with your horse in the same situation.

The new lush grass will produce gas in the rhuman causing bloat. As with a horse this condition can be extremely dangerous to the animals well being.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Introduction and a Question

Hi All,
My name is Jacqueline.  I'm a long time horse owner but a new alpaca owner.  In addition to 2 shetland wethers I've had for 5 years, I have 2 alpaca wethers that I have owned for about a year.  So I don't know a whole bunch.  I keep the sheep and alpaca together in a dry lot and they get hay twice a day plus a little grain once a day.  One of the alpaca boys came through the winter pretty thin.  He is low man on the totem pole even after the sheep.

My question is if I turn him out on a little grass, do I need to do it a little at a time to accustom him to the change in diet like you would a horse?  Do alpacas colic?  How long should I leave him out at a time?  The grass is a mix with a lot of brome in it.  But it is very wet since we are having a VERY rainy spring here.

Thanks for any advice,
Jacqueline Jacobson

I was at the Buckeye show and one of the biggest sellers at the PBS booth was Ultra Calorie 180.
We had an older girl and tried everything, Beet Pulp, DYNE, etc.....
I haven't tried this but JP at PBS loves it and she sells out of it every show.

Another question, we were digging up some dirt i their pasture and found some grubs. Are these a problem with our alpacas and if so, does someone know how to take care of these without hurting the alpacas?
