Re: [AlpacaTalk] Speaking Of Pronking!~

hi Susan - my older boys don't pronk - the male crias do, and i have 2 18 month-old boys who still like to race around but it seems once they are mature, they lose their sense of fun.

Its my favorite time of day, dusk. I stop whatever I'm doing and watch them
pronk. One of our five year old females is the best at it even when she's
hugely pregnant, she scares me then.

That's actually how we fell in love with alpacas, watching crias pronk. I
went to buy some orchard grass advertised in a local newspaper and low and
behold, it was at an alpaca farm! AND we arrived right at dusk, it was
magical.
We were hooked and now here we are, four years later. : )

Re: [AlpacaTalk] re: hi from new member

hi Janice - i have baby-doll X romney sheep - they are a hoot,- like short-legged tanks - i got them for my grandsons and then my son moved his family across the country. My next door neighbors want them so I am trading my sheep for some alpaca-sitting while we go on a much needed holiday in April -
My ram and favourite herd-sire like to hang out together. They are definitely the "odd couple".

My next adventure is to find someone to shear my 4 alpacas for me, and to
help trim their hooves!
Pam>>>>

Who shears your sheep? The guy that shears my alpacas is actually a
sheep shearer, but when the alpaca people discovered his gentle ways, he
had a whole new clientele.
You can trim their hooves - that part's easy - it's getting them to
*let* you, or restraining them.
Do you trim your goat's hooves? I think its about the same, but I've
never had goats so don't really know. There are other people here that
have goats so I am sure they can tell you better than I.

Do you have your sheep for fiber? Or grass cutting :-).
I used to want some Baby Doll sheep, but haven't thought about it in a
long time.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Speaking Of Pronking!~

hi Janice - i'm glad your cria is doing well.

yes my old girl is hilarious - she is the boss of the herd and very dignified - a direct Chilean import - dignified that is until it's time to pronk and then she really gives the crias a run for their money - they can't keep up as she is very quick at changing directions and leaves them in the dust. She is the mother of a gorgeous light rose gray female born last summer and i think she might be pregnant again - i had no intention of breeding her last year but she would not leave our stud alone. She was teasing him from her side of the fence and driving him nuts and over the fence he came. She is a bit of a party animal.

We love her, she is such a character, and i hope she reaches a very ripe old age.
It's fun sharing happy stories about our alpacas - it kind of balances out the mites, and injuries, and all the other "experiences" that come along with raising these wonderful animals.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Speaking Of Pronking!~

My three bred females 8/9 yo, will all pronk with the crias on occasion if instigated, and regardless of stage of pregnancy. The crisa like to end their laps by bumping into their respective moms and eventually the moms join in, or hide in the barn! One of them (the oldest) even starts it herself sometimes. And one acts like "ok, fine *sigh*, if everyone else is doing it...*sigh*", but you know she's secretly smiling :) I love it!!!!!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: feeding questions/DE

I have used Paravac from Eaglepeakherbals.com for giardia in cats and alpaca
people swear by it for alpacas. It worked in a week on a cat we had been
treating with meds for five months! Best news is that its only $9.20 for 1
oz., but I recommend the larger 4 oz. size for $30.90 for alpacas. Don't let
the bottle fall on its side or it will leak out.

That's great to hear!

As I have been reading some goat lists lately I am seeing a number of
people rave about how great their goats look once they switched them to
an herbal wormer. They talk about one in particular but can't remember
off hand what it was. They talk about how great their coats like, and
how their color has improved. I am thinking it might work the same for
alpacas. Certainly worth a try. I know several here already do the
herbal wormers. I have been so lax on my worming that I feel like I
want to catch up with the chemical wormers, make sure they are in good
shape to start with and then maintain them on herbals..... I guess except
for the ivermec for m-worm :-(.

Warmly, Janice, going to start this week-end throwing a handful of DE on
the pacas and the horses feed. do you do this at both feedings, or just
once a day?
