Hi Allison and everyone,
I just got a message from Cooki. She said they just passed $3400,
donations ranged from $5 to $1000 from 82 farms in 30 states and 2
countries. I think I'll write to Rob Bruce and Michele Armour to see if
maybe Rob could mention this to his "The View" friends...

RE: [AlpacaTalk] alpaca abuse

Heather,

You are not the only one who did not donate yet. I'm waiting for the next
paycheck. I just started automatic deposit and I wanted to be sure it was
really deposited, so I did not do it over the holiday weekend. But, on
Monday, I will donate. It does not have to be a lot. It is like
raindrops….if enough of us do it, there will be a "flood" of money to fund
the reward.

Best Regards to everyone here,

Ok, in case that link didn't work, here's a TinyUrl link to the same
page:
http://tinyurl.com/2mvn9e

Again, flag the jek and report him and any other posts/videos of this
genre to customer service. Also, someone mentioned SPCA, PETA, you name
it! My state of Oregon has a "Zero Tolerance" for animal abuse (of
course budget has a lot to with the actual enforcement, but it's a
start) and I think we all need to speak out every time we see something
like this happening!

Also, please take time to donate to the reward fund to find the
complete monsters who beheaded Tana Ward's cria. Whatever you can
afford, $10, $15, $25, $50... I am guilty of not donating anything yet.
If every alpaca breeder in the country donates even $10, I'm sure that
will be enough to encourage someone to talk. "If you're not part of the
solution, you're part of the problem." I'm not finger pointing, I have
sat on my rear and not donated, yet, either.

It's like in the 80s a friend of mine said she didn't recycle bottles
and cans, because, what difference can one person (with a husband and 3
kids) make? Well, we all know, it is up to each and every one of us
make that difference. If everyone waits for someone else to do it,
nothing gets done. But if each of us gives our bit, however small, it
adds up to a very large difference!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Feed discussion

Hi Wendy,

Have you tried alfalfa hay for your skinny girls?  I feed my nursing moms and skinny older girls alfalfa (I have horses, so have on hand anyway), but not so much the pellets etc.  I figure they should get the majority of their calories from hay.  My vet also did suggest increasing the pellets, but when I started adding alfalfa, it helped.  Others suggest flax seed, soaked or shredded beet pulp, Calf Manna (or whatever generic form available) etc.

hi Heather - i for one would like to talk about feed - i was really interested recently to hear about giving crias karo syrup or whipping cream - i've never heard of either as a feed for alpacas - but then i dont have anyone to really discus these things with, either. I know i've received some really careless advice in the past from sellers, so i don't go back to these sources but i've learned a lot, and am still learning - the biggest thing i've learned is i don't want my animals getting "that'll do" care

I think my mom's are too thin - they are all still nursing and are also pregnant - i give them good quality hay, alpaca pellets with some dairy feed (with molasses) mixed in, plus free access minerals - i know i feed more than some foks recommend, but my girls are certainly not obese. They are also wormed regularly. I would really like to put some weight on these moms - i live in BC, and buy the alpaca pellett feed sold here - i've seen other "specialty" alpaca feeds advertised but don't know where i can buy it

any advice on this subject would be very much appreciated.

Hello all,
I just want to let everyone know that you are all free to discuss at
length, on this true forum, the merits and/or shortcomings of any feed
product. If anyone wants more information about a feeding philosophy,
program, product, please ask or explain!

Learning can only be accomplished by discussion. If the same point is
rehashed umpteen times, so be it! If the same argument is voiced
umpteen times as well, so be it!

I do not believe in shutting down discussions because one side has a
divergent opinion from mine.

Best regards,
Heather

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Feed discussion

Hi Wendy,
I would make a blanket statement and say that a bit of Karo syrup is
given to very new crias is they are lethargic as an energy boost. If
newborns haven't nursed enough they can quickly become hypoglycemic and
can become very compromised very quickly. I don't think I'd give
routinely by any means. In fact, we've never done, although I had one
this year probably could have used it since she spent a week at OSU.

For bottle babies, we make a mix of goat milk, organic yogurt, and
whipping cream. We feel that babies can use the probiotics in the
yogurt, and the whipping cream is for making sure they put on weight.
Babies need a lot of fat for energy for growth and for building the
nervous system and brain. Another breeder recommends lowfat or skim
milk and yogurt for his bottle mix, but we feel high-fat for bottle
babies is required.

Free Alpacas Newsletter- How to Profit from Alpaca Farming

[AlpacaTalk] Feed discussion

Hello all,
I just want to let everyone know that you are all free to discuss at
length, on this true forum, the merits and/or shortcomings of any feed

Best regards,
Heather
