Re: [AlpacaTalk] bedding

It depends sometimes the pine oil in the shaving "can" be an irritant. Remember pads not hooves. I have used clay kitty litter (non clumping) to help soak up urine on floors. Also some use the wood pellets for wood stoves. They swell up and fall apart into sawdust. Just check out they don't have harmful additives. Those ar less likely to get in eyes and cause irritation. If you are worried, change to something else for a while a few months and see if your problems clear up.

they are usually on top of hay all the time. I don't think pine shaving
would hurt them. If they have to reach up for the hay, that might cause eye
problems.

I have a barn with a dirt floor and have been using pine shavings in the
stall as they love to poop in there.

I only have rescues and do not show them so I don't mind that it gets in
their coats, but wonder if there are any problems with
the shavings? I am treating one for an eye infection and some sort of foot
problem.

What do you, who have dirt floor barns use if anything?
AND, do you think the shavings could be the cause of these problems?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] bedding

We have dirt floors in our shelters. And yes, they do love to poop in there! We don't use any bedding, generally, but we do often put down some Dry Den and Stall dry on the poop areas to help with cleanup.
