[AlpacaTalk] Re: MY GIRL IS *OVERDUE* -- AGAIN!

This isn't that unusual. Based on her last breeding date, what date is 355 days out? While 335 is cited as the "average," spring births are regularly 355 or longer. My girl is at 341 today, and HUGE!, but she went 364 last year. Unless she is acting strange, or distressed, grab a glass of wine and enjoy the pause in the rain~!

Last year she carried for 377 days, then delivered a 17 pound True Black girl. The baby was healthy and strong and was a *complete* success in the show ring this year. Now Estee is overdue *again*. I can only hope this new late baby will be just as spectacular.

However, Estee Lauder delivered Dea Luna on May 31st. In looking at my paper trail, Estee was *non-receptive* at 3 weeks and was re-exposed almost 2 weeks later and immediatelhy cushed, bred and got pregnant. This would mean it is not possible for her due date to be June 21 but, rather, later. However, this would also mean that she is still overdue.

At this point I don't know what or how to think, and I am very concerned and feeling in limbo. Last week Estee was walking around very agitated, "talking" alot, only nibbling at her food, and it seemed that the time was coming. This lasted for 2 days. Then she seemed "just normal" again. Her teats are swollen but that is about it. The baby is kicking up a storm, and the vet said the baby is in a good position (at least it was on Monday). The only thing that I can think of is that I was given the incorrect delivery date.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: What are you feeding?

I feed Norm Evan's Alpaca Maintanance from Blue Seal 2x/day, with Evan's E Minerals in the AM. I feed per the label, which is about one cup 2x/day for preggos and 1/2 cup 2x/day for my 3 yearlings. Mom's that are in the last month or preg, first 3 months of nursing or skinny, get a little extra. The 3 preggos also get about 2 flakes of hay each now since they won't go out to graze b/c they want to lay in front of the fan all day... They 3 yearlings, llama and maiden, OTH, get 2-4 flakes a day total, b/c they eat the grass like they are supposed to (sorry, but I am sick of MOWING the preggo pasture and paying for hay! LOL). In winter they obviously eat a lot more hay (about a bale/day for 4 moms, 1 llama and 3 cria). I use the best grass hay I can get, which seriously sucks right now (the hay that is) since we've had sooooo much rain and all the first cut is ruined and just getting cut now, so there is going to be a major shortage of 2nd cut this year, and we're all still feeding last year's 2nd cut leftovers.

OK, enough whining. Keep in mind that most feeds and mineral blends are formulated for the part of the country in which you live and are intended to balance the average mineral excesses and deficiencies in your specific area. Calf Manna is a platable supplement, but don't overfeed it b/c it is very high in copper. The best supplement for fatting up a skinny is alfalfa hay (not pellets, and I haven't had much luck with the Denje (chopped, bagged alfalfa) either).

Good luck and wlecome!

I have the herd on a wormer protocol recommended by my vet. I do not have pasture grass for my alpaca to graze on yet. The fields that I have must be wiped out and seeded with the appropriate grass, which I am in the process of doing, but that doesn't help the alpaca much. I will be doing fecal testing this week to be sure it is not a parasite issue with this female, but I am testing the entire herd.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] MY GIRL IS *OVERDUE* -- AGAIN!

We had a suri female carry 381 days last year.  She had a really healthy big TB suri girl, 26 lbs. at one week of age (we were on vacation for the delivery and she wasn't weighed at birth).  She waited until we went on vacation and then delivered the next day!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] What are you feeding?

We feed our females free-choice (males twice a day) alfalfa-bermuda grass hay that is really nice and they do very well on it.  They were wasting too much of the orchard-timothy hay to make it worth feeding.  Anyone else try feeding this?

We also feed our females Llama pellets once a day (much cheaper than the Mazuri alpaca ones and about the same) and Golden Blend minerals mixed in with the pellets (about 2 cups a day per female).  Our males get pellets only as a treat but do get the minerals.
